Aggies kills Pistol Pete
Despite alumni protests, the New Mexico State football team will be seeing a different mascot around campus this season. NMSU has officially done away with "Pistol Pete", opting to outfit Pete with a lasso instead.
The university says that the decision to strip Pete of his trademark sidearms is more of a concerted effort to remake NMSU's image nationally. Removing the weapons wasn't a priority, it just worked out that way, they say.
The Aggies have also announced new uniform and helmet designs featuring crimson & white as the school's colors. NMSU has officially done away with black as an "official" color.
The Helmet Project says the new helmets will be white with a script "Aggies" underlined & written in crimson, crimson stripes and a white face mask.
The university plans to unveil the new mascot later this fall.

Pistol Pete with out his gun is like Lobo Louie without teeth.This Aggie Alum will be cheering for the Lobos for now on.

Hey NMST Fans I need some advice.
5 of us are headed for Las Cruces for the Cal(Not Cal fans) game as well as the UTEP/NM game. We heard the Ramada was a walk to the Stadium as well as Hurricane Alley. True? Is Hurricane Alley a good pre- and post-game party spot?

I really like the new logo and think that Richard Evarts is the best log designer out there.The critics should stop crying because NMSU stinks and their old "pistol pete" is unoriginal.Sorry the basketball team went 4-25.better luck next year

NORTH TEXAS will win it all new mexico state will be lucky to win 3 games.I tryed out for the team and made it but then i quit because north texas offered me a scholarship so now im playing there and we will kill new mexico state this year they dont even have as much as athletism as my little toe. As a graphic artist myself, I think the logo is ok, but as my girlfriend and I both agree, paying a marketing company in LA $220,000 for a logo is too much especially when the logo shows him holding the lasso improperly. Big oops for that marketing dept, seriously get your stuff straight, ever heard of research??!?!?!!!!

I just logged on to the NMSU merchandise store and see that ridiculous cowboy image purporting to be Pistol Pete, now renamed "Pete." I also read the blogs and see that the design came from some California "image" firm. Along with the PC correct mindbenders making decisions for us Alumni have we also gone "Hollywood?" Next they'll drop the fight song in favor of Yippie Yi Yo Ki Yay!!!
