Butch Davis: Way too media savvy for UNC fans
Tarheel hearts are all aflutter after Butch Davis told The Charlotte Observer that he is "interested" in returning to coaching and "interested" --presumably-- in the North Carolina job.
The former Miami Hurricanes and Cleveland Browns coach, who's one of the hottest names in coaching, confirmed his interest in a telephone interview Tuesday."I don't know what direction they're going to go in," he said, "but I definitely am interested, and I'm interested in getting back into coaching."
...
"I really, truly do have an interest in getting back into coaching," Davis said. "But ... I know it's a sensitive time."
Call me skeptical, but I really don't think Butch Davis meant what UNC fans want to believe he meant. Tarheels are buying into a meaningless quote and internet rumors of Davis buying a house in North Carolina. (He hasn't bought a house anywhere, by the way.)
The reality is that Davis is simply manipulating the willing media to get his name out there for (other) potential coaching gigs. What leads me to that conclusion? Well, I think the fact that Davis gave basically the same generic quotes to The Miami Herald:
''It's not in good taste to talk about any jobs that aren't open,'' Davis said. "That's horribly unfair. It's unfair to the coach, unfair to ask me or anybody else about that. It's in poor taste to comment until jobs become open and until you've been contacted."It's extraordinarily premature to discuss any jobs at this time. But I am interested in getting back into coaching.''
I'll be glad to eat my share of crow if it comes to that, but... don't get too excited Tarheels.
Butch Davis is just using the media to get his hat in the ring. He will be coaching somewhere & soon, just don't expect it to be in Chapel Hill.

I dunno - for one, if Davis says he's interested in the UNC coaching job, I don't see that you've presented any real evidence that he's not.
Second, I don't see many UNC fans on the net proclaiming it's a done deal or anything close.
Third, there were rumors that Davis would be a target before the quote was published.

It's funny how time blurr's some people's minds! The last person we need at Miami is B.Davis, so I for one hope that he does end up at UNC or FIU.Some cane fan's would like to forget (out of desperation)the 97,98,99 seasons where they were flying banners over the OB calling for Davis's head, nor do they want to remember how bad he sucked on game day,and this great recruiter nonsense,,it was P.Garcia that was the recruiting guru that brought so many of those great player's to Miami, that Davis gets so much credit for. This is one Miami fan that would rather look to the future for the answers, not the past!!

I think the Hurricanes shouldn't settle for anything less than Davis or Schiano returning to Miami. What I don't want is the U to bring in some guy with minimal or no coaching experience. We need an immediate impact. I don't want to wait 3-4 years for another BCS game. Miami should play in a BCS every single year no exceptions!

It is funny how quickly fans turn on a head coach. Sure Coker is having a tough time right now but he is still the guy that won a NC and about 30 strait games. In a few years, USC fans will be complaining about Carroll if they are not in the top 3 every year.
College football runs in cycles and nobody stays on top for more than 3-4 years.

Carolina wants Davis, but Davis aint stupid. UCLA, Bama, FLORIDA STATE(yep, i said it), and host of conference schools with better facilities, stadiums and tradition can offer more than a basketball school. If UNC is serious, then they'd better start pumpin caish in that thar football program, and I aint talkin alum cheddar, Im talkin MJordan moola.

Miami will not hire Butch Davis again. Mark Richt will be Miami's new head coach. He's a great recruiter and runs a great program. If there is any drop off from Davis to Richt, its very minimal. Davis will coach elsewhere.

Austin (#7):
Why in the world would Richt leave Athens?
He's got a great job in an awesome college town where he has begun to build his own legacy out of the shadow of Vince Dooley with an adoring fan base...
Leave all that to go to Coral Gables where he has to deal with a fickle fan base, clean up a thug image, and uproot the kids to move into a town lacking a true college atmosphere...
I kinda doubt it...

Mark Richt was a football player at Miami. That is the reason he might want to return there. It's sad to see his school the way they are right now. You think he doesn't want the chance to turn that program around? The only thing that would be keeping him from going, as you said, is his current job. Maybe he wants a change in scenery.......

Rumor has it that Butch has already purchased a home in Miami. Butch was never one of my favorite play calling coaches. But he does know how to motivate. If he had stayed and not gone to Cleveland I think we would have won 2-3 National Championships.

Randy Shannon is living on past glory; UM's defense has become a joke. Why should UM hire him? The school needs someone with head coaching experience.
Saban lives here now, and he doesn't look too secure with the Dophins.
Butch already owns a home in the Florida Keys; please remember that by quitting just before signing day, Butch put UM in the position of having to hire a coach immediately. Why should the school trust him again? It was Pete Garcia who was the recruiting guru then; not ButchCoochieHeel said:

goodolnuma, have you been to chapel hill to see the facilities? have you heard baddour say that they will pull the resources (what ever it takes) to get the guy they want? UNC has one of the wealthiest booster clubs (ram's club) in the nation, not to mention top 3 in merchandise sales every year. money is there, facilities are there, location is there. the only thing is can they compete with b-ball. well, i saw mack brown compete with b-ball and raise tremendous cash, so I think it can be done. I agree with rock, it's a done deal, whether butch davis is the right guy or not, he is UNC's next coach.

Mark Richt leaving UGA to got to Thug U? ROTFLMAO!! There is absolutely no way that is going to happen. First of all, he is in a great situation in Athens and has established the program as one of the nation's elite programs. Second, his personality and religious convictions are far more suited to a place like GA than Miami. Third, his father and his siblings have all moved to Athens so they can be together...they aren't all going to uproot and move to S. Florida. Amy UM fans hoping for that are going to be very disppointed.

You can forget about Davis being more savvy than the UNC fans. The fans aren't negotiating with him. For that matter, the Carolina AD isn't even negotiating with him. Butch is dealing with business folks who are going to make that happen. By the way, expect Mack Brown in Chapel Hill within three years as AD.

Fire Coker now, let an assistant coach run the team until Miami's Bowl game, give Butch a guaranteed contract today. I'm willing to suffer through 2 or 3 more looses this year @ Miami just so we can get back one of the best COLLEGE coaches/recruiters in the business.
