Probation for Stony Brook
The NCAA announced that Stony Brook has been placed on three years of probation. Lack of institutional control was mentioned in the final NCAA report. Most of the violations centered upon certification issues related to 53 student-athletes.
The violations occurred the first two years the Sea Wolves were playing in Division I after previously being Division III. 12.5 total scholarships will be lost over the next two years in 10 different sports including football, which loses 1.5 scholarships.
The school apparently self-reported most of the violations. They have hired new compliance staff members and must submit to a compliance review following the current academic year as well as sending staff members to the NCAA compliance seminar annually.
Most of the certification issues related forms not completed properly as well as athletes playing who should have been ineligible because of academics and transfer rules.
