Navy - Notre Dame to play in Ireland

The legendary Navy - Notre Dame football series got a 10-year extension this week and - as part of the new deal - the teams agreed to face off in Dublin, Ireland in 2012. Navy & Notre Dame last played in Dublin in 1996, a game the Irish won 54-27.

The 2012 Dublin game will be a "home" game for Navy. All home games for Notre Dame will be played in South Bend, while sites for the Navy home games have yet to be confirmed.

It seems like Notre Dame would play Boston College in Ireland...seeing that they play(ed) for the Ireland Trophy and all. Why would the United States Naval Academy have a home game on foreign soil?

That would be one hell of a road trip.

Home game for Navy playing the Fighting Irish...makes sense to me. I guess when they play in the Gulf of Mexico, Notre Dame will be the home team...

To all the ND "Irish" fans: Navy has always had more sons of Erin on the team than ND. Wake up and smell the shamrocks! Oh, and we graduate 99% of our players. ND doesn't come close. Go Navy!

    Tom Kiely

Navy is #1 in overall graduation rates and ND is number #2 in the nation, so your "ND doesn't come close" is a stupid comment. I'm a ND grad and my number #2 man is a Navy grad......Now I'm thinking about firing him over you stupid comment.
    Go Irish !!!!!

If you can him I'll be glad to handle his wrongful termination case. I see you didn't dispute the first part of Keily's post regarding the %age of players of Irish descent on both teams. ND owes it's continued existence to the USN. That being said I will be listening to the ND Band on Saturday night at the San Diego American Ireland Fund Dinner..Go Navy ...Up the Irish!

I have have nothing but respect for Navy for keeping my all time favorite school up and running through tough times. But who care about graduation rate %. Notre Dame also has a high graduation rate. Fact Navy hasn't won against Notre Dame in 14 or 15 years now. I hope Navy's working hard on that triple option they run. It wasn't scessful in 05 against ND. Go Irish!!

WOW this is great news. I've been to all football games in Ireland since I was born, BC V Navy begin the first in '88 and Bears V Steelers being the last. We are ND!

    Some facts:
    + I'm a Navy grad, Class of '86
+ Navy last beat ND in 1963 behind Roger Staubach
+ Navy has come exceptional close over the last 20 years, most notably in 84 at the Meadowlands & 95 in South Bend - hence the more pointed loss in 96 in Ireland
+ All of Navy's 'home games' in this series (since the early 70s) have been played at venues outside of Annapolis - more tickets, TV coverage & revenue
    Opinion:
+ Despite recent improvements to Navy's program, they are still several steps below ND's program. However, a great day by Navy and a mediocre day by ND can provide the ingredients for the upset given the closing of the gap Navy has made under Paul Johnson
+ No matter what happens, the Navy-ND game represents what is 'right' about cllege football today - it's a great game!!

Bill - Finally someone posted an intelligent comment. I am a '96 ND Grad, commissioned in the Navy under the NROTC program. I have such respect for both schools and we should all embrace the fact that both institutions are full of tradition and values. One of these years, Navy will end the streak. What is important is that we maintain the level of repect on both sides. I enjoy the friendly competition with my great friends from the Academy.
