Notre Dame QB transfers to Northern Illinois

When Notre Dame QB Demetrius Jones was benched in favor of freshman Jimmy Clausen, it was apparently the beginning of the end of Jones's career at UND.

Jones, who missed the bus and did not travel with the team to the Michigan game, has left Notre Dame and enrolled at Northern Illinois, according to NIU blog Red and Black Attack.

While the mainstream press has not confirmed the move (and Irish head coach Charlie Weis has no idea where Jones is), diggers on NIU message boards have found Jones's listing in the NIU student directory.

Rivals site Irish Illustrated quotes sources saying that Jones intends to transfer, which would seem to add more credibility to these early reports.

On Friday multiple sources told Irish Illustrated that Jones, who started in Notre Dame's season-opener against Georgia Tech, had decided to leave the program in search of a better opportunity for playing time.

According to Rivals, Jones could be available to play at NIU in 2008, provided he is enrolled by the 12th day of classes.

NCAA rule 14.5.5.1 states that "a transfer student from a four-year institution shall not be eligible for intercollegiate competition at a member institution until the student has fulfilled a residence requirement of one full academic year at the certifying institution. Further, a transfer student-athlete admitted after the 12th class day may not use that semester or quarter for the purpose of establishing residency."

But if Jones enrolls at his next school before the 12th day of classes he could count the fall as part of his year away from competition.

Jack, the publisher at Irish Illustrated, has more or less confirmed the Jones transfer within the message boards. Of course, there is some remote chance that Jones could be denied release from his Notre Dame scholarship and subject to an eligibility fight a la Brandon Warren's transfer release from FSU to Tennessee. Most Irish followers do not think that Weis would go that route, however.

it was no secret who the big man on campus was going to be when clausen signed his letter of intent....he may have thought that he would start a couple of games but, jones knew then he was eventually battling for future back-up duties....

probably a good move for jones and his college career, but if he just left without talking to, or letting weis know about it, then i think that is is pretty shady .....

    go gators.....and hokies

And if Weis has a good season two years from now he'll still be a genius to the media. Let's not forgot Brady Quinn was a Ty recruit, if I my memory is correct.

Where is IrishJT? The guy transfered thats alright afterall this is a Notre Dame football thread. America is obsessed with ND football and their storied history. Its kind of sad that some would jump off the ship as if its sinking.
Coach Weis has his hands full and its early in the season. Maybe in the future they should schedule other opponents that could use the national exposure that playing ND would give.
For example instead of Penn St why not Rice.
I know they have a future game against Baylor and right now the 2-1 Bears would give them a great game.

but the other part of me says... sheesh injuries can open up PT instantly.. giving you a chance to prove yourself.. you already played a game and lost your chance at RS this year.. why not suck it up.. that OL at ND is so bad that JimME will go down this year.. his chance will come..

TrojanHorse: You can retain your redshirt so long as you are an underclassman who does not play past the first half of the second game. The guy probably knew that the Michigan game would be a blowout and that Weis would put him in, burning his redshirt. That was why he split when he did. The kid showed a savvy knowledge of NCAA redshirt rules.

It's a good move for DJ. His style of play doesn't fit in a Charlie Cheesebuger offense. I heard that Sharpley finished the Michigan game at QB for ND. Does anybody know whether this was just cleanup time or was Clausen so bad that Charlie benched him?

Weis is a horrible coach and so is his OC. I watched App. State and Oregon use a spread attack to run all over a bad Michigan team. So Notre Dame, a terrible team, uses a two tight end formation most of the game.
You can not win unless you score. Notre Dame will score a offensvie TD against Michigan State, but will lose the game.

    CU,

GREAT question. I wouldn't want to be the coordinator whose squad comes out on the short end of the stick. Coaching 101 - when the team heads south immediately replace a coordinator. Had Mike Shula known that he would still be coaching at Alabama. Thank goodness he flunked coaching 101. Big Question. What does Charlie Cheeseburger do if the entire team transfers to Northern Illinois?

    Big Tide,

i follow collge football a little more than i should.... but many college coaches will hire friends they coached with or played with. They tend to hang on to them.
Reggier Herring is a great example. What a wonderful person and everyone likes him. But he is a horrible DC. I am shocked he has been there for three years.

My bet - Clausen transfers. He has no chance of going pro with this ND team. It will take a lot of time turn this team. Going to be easy for other teams to pick off all those verbal commitments for 08. Don't think they will be able to add quality talent. Charlie was not well liked in South Bend when he was winning. This will end poorly.

I'm right here. The boys aren't looking too good. However, DJ will excel at Northern Illinois and I wish him all the luck in the world.

For those of you who think Notre Dame football is over, think again. We have a young team...that's it. We are still suffering from a Ty Willingham hangover because all of his recruits are the leadership of the team (Juniors & Seniors). Charlie will get these boys rolling shortly.

TampaGator come on man, Notre Dame is playing the worst football in the history of the program and the alumni and boosters are not calling for Charles Weis job? I would like for one day where race won't be a factor but it is. The Notre Dame fans are going to say well Chuckie Weis got us to BCS Bowls! But they were blowout defeats! That is why the SEC has only hired 1 African-Americian coach in it's 75 year history. Gentlemen:

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but isn't NIU a D-1 AA school? ...and if so, doesn't that negate the need for a release from ND's scholly? ...and doesn't it render the 1 year sit out provision inapplicable? (sincere questions; not retorical).

...CW's game plan "b" probably called for spred to be run by DJ--who didn't show up. That's probably why they went with the more conservative offensive scheme.

...the question that begs to be answered, is why the stealthy departure? Kind of wormy; there appears to be something more at play here than merely college eligibility (he could have simmply quit); something is amiss.

Prediction: Notre Dame Admin now realizing that Charlie Weis was a mistake--the Belichick scandal will be tied in, and serve as the rationale/ justification for termination of his contract (i.e.--not his "genius" that won those SB rings, but cheating...).

Question: who might ND replace CW with?

...the return of Lou Holtz? (...he seemed to be auditioning for the Michigan job last week (...hence there may be some interest in a return to the sidelines) but since Lloyed Carr seems to have bought some extra time...

    Just some thoughts...

...when was the last time OU had a black coach?

Let's be careful in losely tossing around allegations of racism, without some hard evidence to back it up.

CW may have been a mistake, but Ty W'ham started an unprecedented dessent into mediocrity--even if it in turn was started by Bob Davie--the bottom line is that it happened on his watch.

Second guess the merits of ND's decisions all you want, but unless you have something more to back up racism allegations, they don't warrant sincere thought.

Hey TampaGator...Oklahoma actually hire John Blake from 1996-1999 he is African-American. He was fired cause he could not beat Oklahoma State not texas. He had a 2-1-1 record against texas but 0-4 against OSU. Let the record show OU was still on probation during that time. Robert Stoops gave him credit after he won the 2000 National Title because he recruited that underrated team. OU also has an African-Americans has their men's basketball and baseball coaches. Hey man I ain't here to make you see da' light but you got to say ummmm? It was noted in news articles that the alumni did not want him hired. Can I produce that article...of course not!

    OU-Ron & LC:

Hired for 3 years...while OU on probation...then fired for sub par performance due to the probation levied before he got there...

...suggests racism more than T W'ham getting canned for sub par peformance of team that was sub par before he got there, went 0-3 v USC, got blown out multiple times, slipping in recruting rankings...

One additional point: CW=ND alumnus; T W'ham not.
Alumni coaches are always given more margin of error than outsiders.

Again, let's leave the allegations of racism for another forum, or another day--when and if (and only if) there's more evidence to substantiate the claims.

    TampaGator..
Come on TampaGator... let's broaden the discussion, but keep the Sport's theme..

I understand this is a sports forum... but don't think for a moment that Sports is not filled with politics & prejudices. The politics of sports is what makes money for teams, coaches and schools.

ND's AD has to be the most political person on campus to balance Team, Coach, Alumni, School, and other booster's interest. Purely opionion, but I think there were influences others than Wins & Losses involved with Ty's firing. We'll never know for sure, but what we do know is that Ty is not 0-3.

Not seeing bigotary for what it is does not make it go away especially in bastions such as ND; it only hides it. It allows it to stay where it wants to be "in the closet", and convienently used. It needs to be brought out into the sunlight where all can see it for what it really is.

What we do know is that Charlie's 3 years have produced dubious results. Yes 3 years, if you examine several of those last year marginal win's you'll see just how thin they were. This year is only the results from seeds sown for the last 3 years of living off this "rep" and Ty's recruits, (who are for the most part gone).

Boil that swamp water before you drink it..TampaGator

I'll look forward to USC meeting the Florida Gators in the BCS championship, (we need to settle this Pac10-SEC thing anyway..)

Yes, but if they didn't get Charlie Weis then, maybe they were never going to get him. TroyEng:

"...Not seeing bigotary for what it is does not make it go away especially in bastions such as ND; it only hides it..."

...and crying "bigotry" and "racism" without evidence to substantiate such claims, simply obscures situations where there is real racism--in fact, it cheapens claims that are warranted--like fake charges of rape.

Come up with some substance to back up your claim, or please give it a rest.

As for CW--it is year three, and he IS feeling some serious heat. He may not see next year. The 10 year extension? Simply ND playing "the Game"--that is, the recruiting game. An extension communicates to future recruits that the coach will be there for the duration of their carreer.

Gators needn't "boil the swampwater;" that's for pu$$..s with weak stomachs.

I'd love to see SEC champ (preferably the Gators) v. USC. We agree on that much at least.

    GO GATORS!!
