Notre Dame to break Technicolor rules

The marketing powers at Adidas have convinced Notre Dame to cause mass squinting don throwback uniforms for this weekend's Southern Cal game.

The uniforms will honor the 1977 Notre Dame national championship team, which warmed up in blue but came out in green (video) against the Trojans.

Pat from The Blue-Gray Sky originally posted his thoughts on the Addidas marketing back in June when the promotion was announced.

According to the press release, ND will be wearing the jerseys to honor a past championship Irish team rather than as a surprise motivator against a tough opponent. Don't get me wrong, the '77 team was fantastic and definitely deserves to be honored. But why would they get an entire throwback jersey when, say, the '66 team only got a patch? And, more importantly, why release the information now, if not to give enthusiastic shoppers plenty of time to get their orders in?

Notice in the release that it isn't just Notre Dame honoring the '77 team. It's Notre Dame and Adidas. And you, too, can honor the '77 team, at just $65 a pop at a bookstore near you. It's one thing to fill up the bookstore with all manners of ND-labeled bric-a-brac and see what people will buy. But there's something sacred about the actual gameday uniform, and the further encroachment of commercial advertising into the House that Rock Built doesn't sit too well. We don't want ND teams doubling as billboards for the latest and greatest alternative jersey marketing idea. Anyone who has seen what Nike did to Oregon or Florida's uniforms would agree with that
.

Exceptionally valid points which - I believe - echo the sentiments of most Notre Dame fans that believe the Irish football uniform is a sacred, classic design and its history shouldn't be revisited simply to ring the cash registers.

And... I'm saying this with all due respect... these uni's are HIDEOUSLY UGLY.

These uniforms are so awful that even Quasimodo is embarrassed. The only potential benefit is a huge upswing in hot dogs during the game... with mustard and relish.

And don't even think about broadcasting this game on the left coast - otherwise we'll have the legendary uniform maestros at Oregon churning out UND throwbacks in no time flat.

What is the big deal??? Personally, i like it when Notre Dame wears green. It makes sense-Fighting Irish, Irish-Green. And- it issn't like the uniform is permanent.

Does anyone really care about Notre Dame? Seriously.

That video looked like it was in black and white, with Ted Turner 'colorizing' it after the fact.

Isn't it much nicer to trash ND on the periphery rather than just come out with a "Notre Dame is Chump Change" thread?

Didn't the Irish wear the green uniforms during "Rudy"?

It appears that ND paraphernalia has slipped this season.

The uni's are hideous (maybe they'll scare USC into defeat).

    My $.02.

    GO GATORS!!

That is, sales of ND paraphenalia have slipped.

Green, blue, puce, I don't think it's going to matter much this time around.

Every time I check a Notre Dame thread it gets shorter! 9 lousy comments including this one. To answer your question FromVT (#2) nobody on Fanblogs does!!!!

How many other schools could fill their stadium when their team is 1-6???? ND fans are some of the best in the nation.

    GO IRISH!!!

Well, lets see. First Charlie Cheeseburger "went back to the basics" whatever the hell that means and then they had Regis come and give a pep talk and this week they tried green jerseys. What about next week? Green glitter on their shoes?

By the way M GO BLUE, Alabama had 100,000 at the Spring A-Day game. I think that says something for our fan base. Roll Tide!!!!

Anyone else thinking that ND needs to give Charlie Weiss a large helping of the Ty Willingham treatment? People still seem to like Charlie. Is race an issue in South Bend?

Hey Big Tide(Comment #12) Ol' Chuckie did go back to the basics in a sense. The basic way of losing you know just don't put any effort in it! I think if I am a football player what in the (edit) Regis can say to me ta motivate me. Now Kathy Lee? For those George Clinton P-Funk stlye jerseys, if you gonna lose ugly then you should look the part. Hey Jonesy(Comment #1) I have no problem if Notre Dame goes back to green & gold...as long as they are not effeminate shades of it!

Big Tide (Post 12), WVU charges $5.00/head for fans to see the annual spring Blue/Gold game. The proceeds go to a children's hospital. Typically, 5-6 thousand fans showed up. When Rodriguez took over, that # increased to 12-13 thousand. Now, their stadium typically holds 63,000 people. Imagine the money they would be giving that hospital, if they fill the stands on that day. So, you can see why I'm impressed with Bamma's ability to fill a stadium with 40,000+ more for a spring scrimmage. I'd just be happy if WVU could fill theirs……for that hospital.

Bevo Boy(Comment #13), Race does not matter in college football. You just wanna start something. Ol' Tyrone was fired because he was not winning the Big One! He had his players going to class and graduating instead of them being on the field practicing! Did I say practice? I mean he didn't have 'em winning games!

Zac, that is a wonderful thing to do with that spring game money. I predict that stadium will be full for the spring game before Coach Rodriguez gets done.

    M Go Blue/#10:

I'll be damned...we agree on something.

I'll be amazed if they can make it through the season with that streak intact--but I'll sure be pulling for them just the same.

That's some damn inspring loyalty there.

As a side, I thought you didn't like Notre Dame?

    Go Irish, &

    GO GATORS!!

TampaGator, I hate ND as much as any good Michigan fan, but I recognize the loyalty of the Irish fans. I have been rooting for every team that has played the Irish, but now that they are not bowl eligible I guess I can't hate em too much.
