One person killed in explosion outside Sooner game

A loud explosion in a traffic circle about 100 yards from Oklahoma Memorial Stadium killed one person in an apparent suicide attempt. The explosive device could be heard inside the stadium, where the Oklahoma Sooners were on the way to a 43-21 win over the Kansas State Wildcats.

Fans weren't allowed out of the stadium for about 30 minutes following the blast, which occurred near halftime. Other explosives were found and detonated away from the stadium by a bomb squad.

Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson left the game in the 2nd quarter with a foot injury.

Call me skeptical and paranoid, but I'm not convinced this is a suicide. I'm thinking this guy was headed for the stadium with a carload of explosives and didn't quite make it.

Who the hell commits suicide by car bomb unless he plans to take other people out with him?

    Dave,
The fact that other explosives were destroyed offsite by the bomb squad is just a bit fishy.

No, it was not a car bomb. It was an individual suicide, they think a pipe bomb. There was no second device, the bomb squad detonated a back pack for precautionery measures but it did not contain a bomb.

I was at the game. I heard the explosion, thought maybe it was thunder as there was a slight chance of thunderstorms. It shook the stadium a little but it was only a couple of blocks away.

I'm satisfied with the official version of events , as to what I know right now.

Ok, I was under the impression it was a car bomb. But I'm still skeptical.

But still...who commits suicide by pipe bomb? Outside a packed football stadium, no less?

I'm not criminologist or psychologist, but people that kill themselves with bombs are generally planning to take other people out with them. I think that guy was headed for the stadium and didnt get there.

I think we just need to wait for more info. It was dark when it happened, daylight will provide more info and possibly the identity of the bomber.

He would've had trouble getting in the stadium. I think if that was his intent, he would've been there before the game started.

University did a great job of keeping it from us fans in the stadium. After it went off I kept listening for sirens. That would've told me it was a bomb. There weren't any, but I find out today that there were police and fire trucks all around the stadium.

They also kept it off the local news, knowing that cell phone calls to the game could've set off a panic.

They told us at the end of the game through the PA system that there'd been a " police incident " and we couldn't exit the west side of the stadium. That was all we knew and everything went orderly.

More on the suicide bombing at Oklahoma:

One person was killed in the blast and police there are calling it a suicide. Now we know more about that person.

The F.B.I. has identified him as 21-year-old Joel Henry Hinrichs, III. He was a junior at Oklahoma University majoring in engineering. He was also a member of the Triangle Fraternity. Phone books list him as being from Colorado Springs, CO.

Authorities say that the stadium is searched before each game and nothing was found during that search, and no threats had been made.

He also has a roommate who seems to have disappeared. And the Feds won't give out any information about him. How could a guy have that much bomb making material in a room with a roommate, and no one know? I think there needs to be some digging around in the Norman Islamic community.

Are you serious? We need to do digging around in the Norman Islamic community? Man, Frank, you sure do perpetuate the sad-but-true stereotype of a rasict midwestern bigot.
