OU's Peterson cleared in Lexus-gate

Oklahoma RB and Heisman hopeful Adrian Peterson has been cleared by OU following his purchase and subsequent return of a used Lexus. Peterson made an agreement to purchase the car, drove the car for several weeks, and then returned it to the dealer.

OU found that, since the dealer has a "standard practice" that allows customers to purchase a car and then return it, Peterson did not receive an improper benefit.

McRae said the dealership regularly allowed customers who signed contracts to drive the cars for a period of time before financing had been secured.

"We didn't do anything wrong," McRae said. "Is it standard operating business practice? Yes, it's standard operating business practice."

McRae was recently "fired or quit, however you want to put it," he said, because of a dispute with Big Red's majority owner.

I don't know about this one. It really sounds like everyone is saying the right thing to keep this on the up & up. Otherwise the story could read: the dealer gave Peterson a car and when the compliance office started investigating, he returned it. But that would never happen at Oklahoma...right, Mr. Switzer?

I wonder... has the Nebraska team EVER had anything like this situation come up? Oh well, Leads the nation in Academic all americans... has the least amount of "insentive" and still has been a dominant team for how long?

This is not being treated special, not by this dealer. I have bought 3 vehicles from Big Red motors, and have been able to drive them "for several weeks". Before going in to sign a final contract, they do this while finding the best financing rates avaliable. They do a lot of special financing for people who do not have top notch credit ratings. Sounds like there are a lot of people around the country that are afraid to face a Sooner squad with a healthy a.d. and a qb that matured a lot at the end of the season.

Nebraska fans are so pious and holy.

How bout Doug Dubose and his 300Z ? Who made those mysterious cash payments on the lease ?

You people have rolled around in as much dirt as any one else, it just gets hidden much better up there in the middle of nowhere. We would all be amazed at how sleazy NU was if there was a Nebraska State University to turn your asses in.

Do you really believe that there's not some fine rides parked in the NU Athletic parking lot???? If you don't, then your living in the land of Barney the Dinosaur.

Every University has overzealous boosters. No one can escape that. And thats what OU had during the Switzer era, same as Nebraska had during Osborne's time and I'm sure has now. And just like Texas, A&M, Florida, Ohio State, Michigan, USC , Arizona .... you name it.

Pretty childish to even bring this up.

And Kevin , you say something here that is rooted in truth , you said ........

    >>>>>>Otherwise the story could read: the dealer gave Peterson a car and when the compliance office started investigating, he returned it. But that would never happen at Oklahoma...right, Mr. Switzer?

Exactly, That is what I think happened also. And thats how a University's compliance office is designed to operate. OU did their job in the proper manner.

The same way OU's compliance office operated during the Switzer era. If a player shows up driving a questionable vehicle, the University is then required to investigate. A coach, a compliance office, the University prez ...... they all can't keep track of the business dealings of hundreds of athletes. And there's always stupid boosters out there who feel like big shots by giving players extra benefits.

The NCAA investigated Switzer's program for THREE years in the mid 80's. They got an apartment in Norman. They looked at every car driven by every player. And after all that intensive investigation, they found a third team linebacker was driving an oilfield company car he was given during a summer job. It was a Ford LTD, pretty mundane vehicle and provided by a booster on the loose.

Now if it was " car dealers " gone wild in Norman, why did not the NCAA come up with more than that ???? That should not be a very difficult thing to track down huh ?

Unless your in Nebraska and trying to find whose making the cash lease payments on Doug Dubose's 300ZX. Because once you cross the Nebraska state line you enter into the world of the Children of the Corn .......... and nobody talks.

And btw Husker fan, as further proof you live in Barney Land ........

Nebraska has not been a dominant program for about the past six years.

In case you haven't noticed, NU has slipped into obscurity and may never re-emerge.

Reality is a tough pill , huh Husker ????????

There's no question in my mind that it went down that way, Gene. The dealer gave him a car, they got busted, doctored up some paperwork & a story, and then everything was okey-dokey.

But yes, compliance did their job & busted it up in a way that OU can walk away clean. That's what's supposed to happen & that's what (it appears) did happen.

    Kudos to OU.

Well, its a shame that the OU compliance office can't be proactive. But it just doesn't work that way. I'm sure they try. They preach to the donors constantly.

As to the car dealer, I'm almost positive they were trying to get Peterson in that car. The ONLY thing that possibly could discredit that is the nature of that particular dealer. They advertise heavily here in OKC and they market to the people with credit problems. They guarantee they can get people in cars no matter their credit situation may be. They sell mostly used cars.

But that said, that car dealership should know they're dealing with a star OU football player and go overboard to keep the deal legit. They're just stupid car salesmen.

And btw, the sooner Peterson gets in the NFL, I will breathe a lot easier. He's a walking NCAA violation. He's not very bright and coupled with some of these overzealous boosters it becomes an explosive mix.

    Gene,

You are an idiot of infinite proportion. Nebraska has made one of the most drastic changes ever in college football history and has definitely turned the corner back onto powerhouse lane. In 3 short years Nebraska has made profound changes in program philosophy and has as much potential going into this season as any school in the Big XII. Maybe if you followed the program and knew the facts your stupid ass would be able to recognize that. As far as your theory that Nebraska was just as corrupt under Tom Osborne or any other Husker coach for that matter, you bring back to my first point, you're an idiot who clearly knows nothing of the tradition of Nebraska. Go Big Red!

This is always a dicey situation for college athletes, especially the ones who are projected to reach the big leagues. Realistically, the players already get a significant enough benefit by having full scholarships.

Something in the back of my head tells me we're going to be listening to the Husker fans all summer long. I had hoped they would let their game do the talking this fall, but I don't think we'll be that lucky.

I think i'll tell u how good they are going to be... and then let them prove it in the fall. Not to get off-subject but Nebraska hasn't been Dominent in the last 6 years?? what did you do, look up when Osbourne left? 2 years ago (3 if u count the upcoming season) was the only non-winning season for nebraska since you were alive i'm sure. Peope are still riled up that Nebraska could make thier best defenses look like a joke for so many years (while running a whole 10 plays) that when they decide to get "modernized" and have 1 losing season everyone wants to write them off... it'll be fun watching the disappointment when the expectations for failure... fail.

Husker fans will be hushed by the end of September.

Wanna good off season read ? Go to Amazon and find " Big Red Confidential " by Armen Ketayan (sp ). You'll get another version of that saintly program in Lincoln. You can buy a used version cheap.

And I've found out more about the car dealer in Norman. Letting people drive cars for weeks is common practice. They market to people with credit problems, they say " do you have a job, do you have $100 , then we can get you in a car " .

And they do .... with a catch.

They put people in the cars and let them drive them until they find financing. But they don't really look for financing. After a week or a few weeks, they tell the customer what financing they've " found " . The catch is that the customer ends up paying several thousand more than the market value of the car and pays a high interest rate.

The car dealer hopes that customer will accept the exorbitant terms in order to keep the car. The important thing is to get the people in the car. Customer has the option of returning the car, some do , some don't. That's the plight of people with bad credit.

Its pretty sleazy, right there with loan sharks. Those of us with good credit never run across these deals and wouldn't accept them if we did.

And actually, Peterson's deal was through his parents. It was his parents that were promised a certain payment and when said payment was not delivered, they returned the car.

I think OU is on strong ground here. Peterson was offered nothing that is not available to the general public.

    Hey Gene,

"NU has slipped into obscurity and may never emerge". You might possibly the dumbest mo-fo to grace this site. Nebraska is and always will be one of the winningest football programs in NCAA history. Because of one down year amidst a huge course correction you surmise the above statement? You can hate all you want, but you could never be more wrong in your assesment.

Don't you love all the ad hominem arguments from the Husker boys.

I am a dumb idiot, so thus my opinion is wrong.

Don't like what someone says, call them a dumb idiot. Never mind with refuting the facts.

Facts are, NU hasn't finished with an AP final top 10 rating in how long ????

And they've not been anywhere near dominant. Getting 62 hung on you by Colorado is not the sign of a dominant team.

They've beaten no one of consequence in years and years. They beat a 2001 OU team that was limping along with injured QB's and no offensive line. Other than that, there's no great wins .. if that could be called a great win.

Yesterday's news, thats what the Huskers are. In fact, its more like they are history.

And we will see about the great resurgence that's suppose to occur this season. I've got my doubts about all those JuCo players. How many have been recruited by Callahan now, 20 to 30 JuCo players ??? Wow, thats some great recruiting.

And any resurgence may be more attributable to the dismal state of football in the Big 12 North than any return to greatness by the Huskers.

Hate ?? HAHAHA .....its more like ... uhhh ... who cares ? Need I remind you of the title of the article your responding to ???

Buzzman, you don't fool us for a minute. You've bought several cars from the same dealership... (ok, I suppose that's possible, even for an Okie) ...and they've always let you drive the cars for several weeks, with the option to return them?

If they ran business like that, folks would be test driving all their Lexuses for several weeks and returning them, just for kicks. It doesn't pass the smell test, and neither do you.

To whoever it was that said I dont pass the smell test, tough toenails to you. I have bought 5 cars from this dealer in the last 12 years. I wouldnt buy a car from a dealer that wouldnt let me drive it to find out if I liked it or not. By the way. the letters okie stand for Oklahoma Key to Intelligence and Enterprise. You are right about one thing I'm an OKIE and proud of it!!!!!!
