QB Bomar Dismissed from Oklahoma
Oklahoma has announced that 2 players have been permanently dismissed for accepting excessive compensation from a private company. Specifically, they were paid for more hours than they worked. (UPDATE: Now confirmed, it was Bomar) While no names were given in the official announcement, this article at NewsOK.com...
the prevailing rumor on message boards, is that one of the players is starting QB Rhett Bomar. If true, this is an enourmous blow to the Sooners' lofty aspirations for this season.

HUGE PROPS to Stoops & the entire OU Athletic Department for not tight-roping this. As the details come out, I'm sure the Sooners could have choosen other remedies. Given OU's less than stellar track record in the Switzer days, OU made it very clear where the university stands today.

Good for OSU, bad for OU. Good luck, it took OU almost half the season for Bomar to catch on to the sooner offense and he was supposed to be good. You can just see the o-state flags waiving in beautiful orange and black now, can't you. See ya 25 November.

Don't blame the dealership. That's way too easy. Players know the responsiblity that they take on when they play for OU (or any other NCAA team for that matter). Bad judgment on Bomar's part. Very Good sound judgment on Stoops and OU's part!

I never liked Bomar anyway! He's just an idiot punk kid who thought he was untouchable because he was the Sooner's starting QB. Good on Stoops for ridding us of that virus. He probably would've taken a bribe anyway had we reached the National Title again! Good luck with your football career at Crested Butte State, Bomar! With your extensive knowledge of the automobile industry I'm sure the "Assistant to the Assistant Manager" position at Chucky's Back-End-Dealing will be there waiting for you! Or, hell... Lance Bass could always use a good "Personal Assistant"!!!!

Oh wait, this is key...
"Our team and university actions are necessary because of the intentional participation and knowledge of the student athletes in these violations," Stoops said.
... "intentional participation"?... then Bomar is an idiot (as OU Fan put it). And its a permanent dismissal? Damn. Was that Stoops' decision or part of the NCAA rules? With the Ting/steroids situation, the NCAA rule is that they only lose 1 year of eligibility (Ting wouldnt have had any eligiblity left after this season anyway).

You are correct. Boosters are very aware of the rules as well as the players. All the dealership cared about was where their seats are and who they got to "meet and greet". But the poor me, college freshman thing doesn't work. Let's agree that both Bomar and the dealership are at fault.
Should we boycott Bomar? Or anything he ends up promoting, selling, etc? Obviously the answer is no.Real problem is who will be the next quarterback?

People should stop making excuses for people who break the rules because they need money. We all need money. Its the take the money now and face the consequences later. "The I need pizza" mentality. The "I'm entitled to pizza" mentality. Other college students work their way through. Football players are not special. They are not better than anyone else.

Whitney. Whitney who - Whitney Lewis? Oh, sorry my mistake.
Rhett Bomar should join former USC stud recruit, "Whitney Lewis", now that he's at Northern Iowa... they would dominate Division 3B football.Jennifer, Tommy Grady is a back-up at Utah... why's he not at Oklahoma?

I know how Bomar got to start as QB. After
the first game last season when TCU beat Ou
Bomars father told Coach Stoops That if his son
did not get to play he was going to transfer
him to another School. I thought Paul Thompson
was not even given a chance to prove himself.
I hope this young Man has learned a good lesson
And I hope that the NCAA Does not punish the whole team. The whole team cannot help what someone else does. Thank God this Little spoiled Brat is Gone. Good Luck Sooners & may God Bless our Coaches.Cindy said:

Well, if they bring in millions, why are they desperate for money? Surely their sports scholarships pay for dorm & food at the least. I guess I'm hopelessly old fashioned. I remember when football players played for school pride, doctors became doctors for love of science or to serve humanity, lawyers became lawyers because of their interest in law. EVERYTHING in our society is based on money and I don't think we should bribe our way to the top, bribe our congressmen to pass laws, bribe our way to justice, etc. It was wrong to give a bribe and wrong to take one, both sides were wrong. If they want the big bucks, they need to go pro after school. Otherwise they should actually be getting a degree and playing ball for the scholarship. Call me hopelessly idealistic.

I have three things to say. Bomar, you and Quinn are absolute idiots. I hope you never play another down of football. You had it all within reach, but your greed got you this. GOOD RIDENCE. Booster, you are an aggie fan. You should come out of the closet and move to Stillwater. I hope your business fails with-in a week. Bob Stoops, at-a-boy

I am sure that Bomar knows what he did was wrong and for everyone that does not understand about how the NCAA regulates the atheletes go to the website and you can see how the kids have their hands tied and no the scholarships dont pay for an football players food, in fact, not even close. Everyone needs to grow up and this only directly affects the football team, not all the idiots posting from all over the country like they know Bomar or J.D. enough to be judging them. The school did the right thing and I hope the best for Bomar and J.D.

The bottom line is that Stoops has guts, morals and mental toughness. He could have tried to minimize the damage, but he took the high road. I respect him for it. Bomar has always come off in the press as cocky and a little too sure of himself. Perhaps he will get a chance to reconsider now that he will have some spare time on his hands.

So what was the smoking gun? Bomar & Quinn worked at the auto dealerhip the summer of '05. Did they have to submit their tax returns to the OU Athletics Department? My point is this: What triggered the investigation and what happened in the last 48 hours for Stoops/Castiglione to drop the hammer on Bomar & Quinn?
Sleazy agents and boosters are lurking around every corner, but the players are always warned not to take anything considered an illegal inducement or above and beyond what the normal person would receive. Bomar & Quinn are bright guys, but immature and greedy. Immediate gratification. Their selfish act could set the OU football program back several years. Shame on them!

T-Mac - I don't think Bomar has ever been in a position where he couldn't afford a pizza. Allthough, I do agree in principle, that these student athletes are not equally compensated for the revenue they create for the Universities. However, they are still compensated through eduacation, housing and a monthly monetary allotment for living expenses while enrolled. Allthough the allotment is not an official salary, student athletes do get a check every month.

I have been a OU fan since 1974. I have followed the Sooners close every year. What I am about to write are facts, not opinions. First of all I do not know what the Sooners are going to do. They should of not kicked BOmar off the team, suspend him, sure for maybe the first three games or first two (since OU goes to Oregon the 3rd game of the year). DO I think that Bomar was wrong? No because look at the money the players generate. Take former OU cornerback Derrick Strait. During his four years, OU went to the Orange Bowl, which is a 12 million dollar payout, the Cotton Bowl which is a 4 million dollar payout, the Rose Bowl which is a 12 million dollar payout, and the Sugar Bowl which is a 12 million dollar payout. That is $40 million in bowl games his class brought to OU. This does not include T.V. revenue, jersy sales and the sale of college football games by EA sports, or ticket sales. FOr the millions and millions of dollars players bring into OU, thay get a 'free ride" or full scholarship. If you add up the cost of the OU team scholarships and room and board, I bet that the amount of money the players bring in is way more than what they are given on scholarship. NCAA football is a big business, and if Bomar got 18,000 for the summer, no big deal because the university got 2 million for playing in the Holoday Bowl. THis madness has to stop. This is not Charles Thompson selling coke to an undercover cop, or Bosworth taking roids or Buster Rhymes cheating or stealing from another teammate, hell Lawrence Phillips drug his then-girlfriend down the stairs and miss only 2/3 of his senior year, give Bomar a chance, more important the NCAA needs to change its rules because that are dumb. The NCAA "pimps" its athletes by taking all of thier money they earn and punish the kids if they get some money on the sides. The NCAA is a billion dollar business and if the coaches were smart, they would do a boycott of games to show the NCAA how unfair this policy is.

I am so glad texas and okie state fans are cheering this(typical). Prediction Paul Thompson steps up. Kevin Wilson is a very smart o-coordinator he will find a way to utilize Paul. Heck bohmar couldn't even pitch the ball to Adrian. OU gets last laugh!!!!

WOW! The dealership is at fault but Bomar is absolutely at fault too. What a bone head! We all must take responsibility for our actions whether involved with sports or not and although the dealership should be punished for their part in this...Bomar was the one who ultimately cashed those checks and he has no one to blaim but himself for that.

Rob Buck, post #45 is right onpoint!I couldn't have said it better myself. All the college athletes benefit from the millions of dollars the football teams bring in each year from bowl games to the Athletic Dept. That's what I was saying earlier in this thread. The other athletes love the new and up-to-date facilities that they get,but at the same time crucify FB players for making some money. It was the same way when I played and probably won't change.Football players are stupid. They take easy classes. They get a free ride etc.You would hear it all the time. It's insulting.College Football Players should be paid for the revenue they generate for their respective universities.Hell,at least Bomar wasn't sitting on his a$$ all summer like a lot of College students. He was working.Let's not forget that fact!Rob Buck,I wasn't alive in 1974,but I played tailback in the SEC for 3 years and I can relate to everything you talk about. You bring up some valid points bro and I appreciate that very much.I swear you must have played College FB in the past!Much Respect!

I dont really understand the violation. The boys received compensation for services performed right?
Stoops and his staff did what they thought best for the team.
When you have a bunch of young 18-22 year olds some of them are going to scew up, on every team.

I looked back at past blogs and came across the Peterson "Lexus Gate" entry. It's funny now reading back at the posters defending the dealership. Then looking back at the posters defend Bomar during his drinking problems really made me laugh, what fair weathered fans.

Yeah, Bomar was stupid enough to get caught; but who woulden't work five hours for $18,000?! Boone Pickens probably has OSU players on his payroll, some big Texas guy probably has Texas on his payroll, etc. Maybe Bomar just got paid $400/hour...I just don't see why it is so wrong!!

Stoops did the right thing. This knuckle headed kid knew the rules or was really too stupid to actually play ball anyway. Besides, with the Peterson stuff going on not soo long ago he really had no choice. The NCAA would have fried the program if he hadn't done something. Who would you rather loose Bomers or Peterson.
Who brought up Lawrence Philips again. Unbelieveable! The guy was a nut, is a nut and will always be a nut. The only time he wasn't a nut is when the Nebraska coaching staff was putting the screws to him. Besides, the irony is that he didn't violate any NCAA rules. I really doubt we want to walk away from the NCAA rules and simply follow common law. We know how effective the court system is.
OU needs Bomers about as bad as they need an overweight, deaf blind man. The team is solid and the coaching staff is top notch. They may struggle in the early games but you know they will do a great job of preparing someone to fill the role. With Peterson on board everyone will stack the line. You could put a 6 year old kid at QB lobbing lollipops over line with the talent you've got and win. Great staff and great talent. OU will roll.

Now the moron has officially enrolled at Sam Houston State. What is the matter with this dude? He couldn't even wait one year to get back on a legitimate team? This guy has no discipline whatever. And, without that, he has no chance of ever playing on Sunday. What a terrible decision. Almost as bad as the one that Tommie Grady made last year when he decided to transfer to Utah and back up Johnson rather than sticking it out with the Sooners. He would have been the starting QB in his junior year at Oklahoma. But, he'll ride the pine and if he's lucky he'll get to play one year in the mighty Mountain West conference. I don't understand what these kids are thinking about. Don't these people understand that they are showing themselves as complete quitters when they will not fight through competition. The Pro people do not like this. Bomar would have been much better served to transfer to a major Division I University and fight for a job no matter who was the incumbent or whom was the "next big thing" that was on the way. The Washington Huskies might have taken this guy on. How about Colorado? Don't you think that they might need one too. It appears that this dude just does not want to compete. Sam Houston State? You have got to be kidding!
