Sooners looking for little magic man at QB?
There are a few pedigrees in college football that earn instant respect - being the QB of Southlake Carroll HS is one of them.
Former Carroll Dragon and Texas All-State QB Chase Wasson -- who was considered too small for the big colleges coming out of high school, despite his accolades -- is using that reputation to garner a spot at Oklahoma as a graduate student walk-on. After getting a special release waiver from the NCAA, Wasson - who graduates from Texas State in May - will join the QB competition for the Sooners.
Wasson (5-foot-11, 180 pounds) said he has been granted a special waiver by the NCAA allowing him to transfer to Oklahoma after he was released from Texas State. After redshirting his freshman year, Wasson played three seasons for the Division I-AA Bobcats and started five games at quarterback last year....
Last year Wasson accounted for 12 touchdowns rushing, passing and receiving. He was Texas State's second-leading rusher with 358 yards, led the team with 27 receptions and tied for the team high with three receiving touchdowns. He also went 44-of-82 passing for 442 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions.
Though he lacks the jaw-dropping stats, Wasson is elusive and fearless in the open field. I think the 5'11" number is standing on a step wearing cleats. He's more like 5'9". He had OK size for DI-AA, but might need a phone book seat just to see over the Sooner lineman.
Wasson attended the Sooners spring game and -- from the message boards -- looked undersized. While they can't stop him from enrolling, the talk seems to be that OU is anxious to see him in crimson.
Which begs the question - is OU that desperate at QB???

On some level this might be some insurance, but I think it *could* be more for who OU will face in the season opener with an unproven QB: North Texas led by former Southlake coach Todd Dodge who Wasson played for.
TrojanHorse: OU found one HS guy -- Keith Nichol -- who is already on campus, and got a commitment from another for 2008 (Landry Jones from NM). And that's not to mention the RS-FR Bradford who has played at least as well as the other candidate, SR Joey Halzle. Halzle *might* start the first game or two, but he really hasn't shown to be anything more than serviceable to this point.
The Bomar situation left this hole that probably won't be adequately filled until at least next year unless one of the QBs steps up and can even do half of what Colt McCoy did at Texas last year (Bradford seems to have a slight edge after spring drills at getting that shot).

TrojanHorse, we have a JC transfer ( Joey Halzle ) and a HS recruit (Keith Nichol) and a red shirt freshman (Sam Bradford).
Bradford and Nichol have not played in a game and
Halzle has only taken very few snaps, so I guess you can say we are inexperienced at QB. This is the first time I've herd of Chase Wasson, but if Bob Stoops wants to see him in crimson, must be for a good reason. Bob has been pretty good at selecting players and winning games.
I would assume the OU coaches contacted this guy,
could be wrong, he might just want to drive a new Lexus. Thought I would just throw that in there, I'm sure some of the weasles will be bringing it up.So Cal Clippers said:

To think that Tommy Grady is the 3rd-String QB at Utah right now...
But on the other hand, Oklahoma's done pretty well despite the mess at QB; credit Stoops & the Coaching staff.
... Mustian my go knocking on OK's door soon.

Damnit Ron!
Now I have no jokes...
OU is in a pretty bad situation at QB next year. They're hoping for a Colt McCoy but McCoy is the exception, not the rule.
Based on their spring game, even if the QB was throwing well their receivers would drop the passes.
They will definitely rely on their running game which doesn't look to be any worse without Peterson. I don't think it will be enough to beat Texas but the rest of the Big 12 is pretty soft so they should have a good season.

I watched Wasson play his highschool ball at Southlake Carroll, where his dad, Hal Wasson, just took the head coaching job after Dodge went to UNT, and although he's really small, his agility and vision ( if he can see over the linemen), are incredible. Obviously, high school to D-I is a huge difference, but in his senior season in '02, he completed 300 of his 458 pass attempts for 4,822 yards (which is the state record in texas), and 54 TD passes adding over 1,000 rushing yards for at least 8 touchdowns (stat from the end of the regular season). It will be interesting to see what Stoops found in him and how he lines up against the rest of the "unseen" QB's.

I hate OU as much as the next guy, BUT you have to admit a couple things...
#1. It obviously doesn't matter who is QB at OU because as crappy as Paul Thompson played in some games, they still won the BIG XII.and
#2. If any of these QB's on OU's squad are better than Thompson...look out...it will be OU vs NU again for the BIGXII title...
oh and most importantly...

I wouldn't necessarliy say that the Sooners are desperate at QB. And I guess if its not illegal for this QB situation to happen, then I say bring him on in. Theres nothing wrong with Stoops exploring other options. How tall is Seneca Wallis and Troy Smith? They are the only 2 short QB's who I can think of off the top of my head who are pretty good. I doubt but do hope that Wasson has the same scrambling abilitiy as those 2 QB's have. And David, OU looked like crap in last years spring game, but apparently that didn't matter in the outcome of this past season. Going 11-3 with another Big 12 title far exceeded my expectations. And I wouldn't speak so soon about OU/Texas. David, I'm sure you thought Texas would roll over K-State, ATM in Austin, and Ohio State and you probably had spoken too soon as you are now, and look what happened. As for OU this upcoming season, all these new and inexperienced QB's have plenty of time to prepare, compared to Paul Thompson who had about a month before the season started. So I'm not worried too much. Give credit to Josh Heupel. Go Sooners!

Man you guys messed up 2 national championship games getting blown out by USC. I could not believe after the first beat-down the stupid BCS let you guys play USC again. Nobody wanted to see you guys get drilled again we wanted Auburn to get a chance. Well Sooners hopefully you wont play USC anytime soon please. Just forfeit if you hook up with USC again in a BCS bowl.

OU Ron: Your post reminded me of all the inbred mobilehoma jokes. Thanks!
OU Fan:
I didn't expect a Texas win against Ohio State. Being a fan of course I thought we would win.
Don't expect Colt to get injured and bail you out to win the Big 12 South next year. He has added 10-15 lbs. of muscle in the off-season and ALL the receivers are coming back. If Colt doesn't get injured Texas doesn't lose those last 2 games and you don't win the Big 12... I'm not disappointed though because we wouldn't have been able to witness the greatness of the Boise St. game...

You don't have to thank me, It's a pleasure anytime I can degrade you or those lame ass cowhorns. Are you saying that the horns are a one man team, that if Opey stays healthy, you win'en all and if he gets injured thats your excuse for loosing. Just a word of advise---------Don't get caught up in your own Bull---T, it makes you look stupid.

Don't know what pushed your button, but whatever
One would think that you would want your team to play in the NC game instead of Auburn, but I guess your team was not good enough. After remembering the NC game in 2000, I remember WHY.

#17 OU-Ron if u lose ur best player and that player is at Quarterback wich i know ull agree with me is the most important position and u have to find someone to replace him its not gonna be easy so dont pull that one man team bull**** also that secondary cost them that K-State game not Colt getting injured ...and OU wont win the Big12 if there QB isnt exceptional

OUsoonerGuy, Keith Nichol played for Lowell highschool (Michigan) which is about a 20 minute drive from my house, anyway last year our local highschool played lowell in the playoffs and Lowell won something like 45-0 And I heard a lot of peaple talk highly of Nichol, but I also heard his weak point was arm strength.
Anyway I would love to see a Michigander lead the Sooners to a Big 12 Championship!

I'm no OU fan, though I like following teams like OU, TX, etc., to see how they do from week to week. That having been said, I don't think Wasson is your man. Though Sam Bradford seemed to emerge from the spring game as the air apparent, there's still an entire summer's worth of practice to go before Stoops makes a final decision. The bad news: It'll likely be a tough one. On one hand you have Sr., Joey Halzle, who's paid his dues by waiting his turn; no doubt he knows the system, and didn't look bad in OK's spring game. Unfortunately, Halzle has only one year to offer. On the other hand you have RS-F, Bradford, who's learned Stoop's system over the past year, has distinguished himself over the spring, and as a Freshman is likely the future of your ball club. There-in lies the Good News: I don't think OK has anything to worry about at QB. Of course you won't really know until game time, at which time a young QB will be truly tested. All you can do is wait and see. Remember: Big time programs like OK attract the best recruits. Consider T-F, Keith Nichols, who (once he learns the system) has the opportunity to become a solid back-up. Like Bradford, he could be the future of OK football.
It's always a worry when a 3 or 4 year leader graduates, leaving that "gaping hole" to fill at his position. Though it's been proven, "One man can make a difference;" more to the point, no man is indispensable. The better coaches have their teams play to their strengths, and work around their weaknesses. The Sooners will be OK. If not, so, OK doesn't win more than 10 regular season games this year. Count your blessings. With that record, OK still goes bowling; not to mention, there are a lot of good teams which would be grateful just to have the opportunity to play in the post season, let alone finish with as many as only 8 wins. As luck would have it, this is one problem that will work itself out.

#21 The Sooners would have to win the south division which is highly unlikely. They have A&M at home this season and A&M should beat the Sooners this year. The Oklahoma State Cowboys will also give them a good contest as well.
We will all see what the OU is made of during the Red River Shootout.
Oklahoma has the tradition, the coaching staff and the players to always feild a highly competitive team, but they face some equaly competitive teams during their regular season.
They win two or three against the XII South teams, but they wont win all five.

Tomcat, I highly doubt that ATM will win in Norman this season. I think that Stoops will send the Aggies back to College Station with another loss, kind of like he does every time they visit Norman. And I'm sure you said last preseason that OU wouldn't win the Big 12 south and looked what happened, you were wrong. And I remember hearing all that same garbage when Sims and Applewhite were taking the snaps and OU obviously changed peoples minds. And I agree with you regarding the OSU Cowboys, they will be a tough team even in Norman. But also don't forget that Texas plays in Stillwater this season. And you always seem to bash Barry Switzer, but didn't he coach the Dallas Cowboys, an NFL team in the state of Texas, to a Super Bowl ring? Hell, I bet you even like the Cowboys. Go Sooners!

OU Fan I really dont recall ever bashing Coach Switzer, you might have me confused with someone else.I really respect Mr. Switzer he is always on hand when they present the Thorp award to UT players. Yes he did coach some at Dallas,The owner ex-Razorback Jones fired Jimmy Johnson after winning back to back Superbowls and hired Switzer another ex-Razorback. I remember a NCAA Nat Championship game between Oklahoma and Miami in which J Johnsons team UM defeated B Switzers team OU.
Sooners, Razorbacks and Aggies are all rivalry games for the Longhorns and I really respect those traditional rivalry games. They are always alot of fun to watch and sometimes determine a National Champion or who gets to play for ia Championship.
You will recall that one of the most sucessful coaches for Texas was D.K. Royal who played for OU against UT. Hookem-HornsDr.Phil said:

Hey Dr. Phil, you never know. Obviously since I'm a Sooners fan, I say that OU will dominate North Texas. But then again, TCU gave my Sooners an upset in the very first game of the season in Norman 2 seasons ago, so I guess theres a little hope for you. Hopefully, that won't happen again. And I don't know about you, but I'm excited as hell about the OU-Miami game. I'm also curious to see the outcome of Bama-FSU, ATM at Miami, and USC at Nebraska. Go Sooners!

Hey T-Mac my main man hows it hanging dude? I really like old Dr. Phil man him and mean Joe Green have got it going on. I really respect the opinion of these ex-players they really show the confidence and positive mental attitude needed to be sucessful. I honestly dont think that N Tex has much of a chance against OU. Todd Dodge ex-UT QB is at the helm and I wish old Dr. Phil and them alot of luck. This could be a better game than the game that OU played against Boise St. OU better not overlook those Tulsa Golden Hurricanes with new coach T Grahm. Coach Grahm took a 1-11 Rice Owls to a bowl game last year and ended up 7-6. A 7-6 season really aint too bad considering they faced FSU, UCLA, Texas,Troy and Houston. The Sooners will probably whup the Miami Hurricanes and lose to either Tulsa or N.Texas, you never know. Hookem-Horns 28-10

I do agree with you that the QB position is the most important on a team, and I did not say that Texass was a one man team, I asked that question to David, who must think that they are.Quote

I'm not disappointed though because we wouldn't have been able to witness the greatness of the Boise St. game...I do not however agree with you that you must have an exceptional QB to win the BIG 12. Case in point----06-07 season, Paul Thompson did not have exceptional abilities at QB, but he did have a great will to win, that coupled with a talented group of athletes
Who knows ??????!
