Oklahoma, Ohio State ink series for 2016, 2017

The Oklahoma Sooners and Ohio State Buckeyes have signed a home-and-home dates that will rekindle a series that hasn't been played since the mid-1980s.

The first game of the new series will take place Sept. 17, 2016 in Norman. It will be followed by a Sept. 16, 2017 game at Columbus.

"This series will bring together two of the most celebrated programs in the history of college football," said OU athletic director Joe Castiglione. "Oklahoma has demonstrated that it is committed to scheduling games of this kind that mean so much to college football on a national scale. We hope to continue that approach well into our future."

As I've done in the past when two great schools have scheduled inter-sectional matchups, I want to give props to OU and tOSU. I really believe that this is what the NCAA intended when the 12-game schedule format was approved.

For their part, both Oklahoma and Ohio State have been right out there with their scheduling. OU has had (and will have) series with national powers Alabama, Miami, Florida State, Notre Dame and Tennessee. The Buckeyes have put series in place with Texas, Southern Cal, Miami, Cal, and Virginia Tech.

What these two schools -- and several others are doing -- should be applauded and held up. These marquee games are what makes college football great. Regardless of whom you root for, you have to love to see these great games on the schedules.

I hope we continue to see more & more of this trend.

with the bcs system the way it is..this should be a trend...scheduling tough ooc opponents..

i was happy to see that florida has hawaii and miami for their first two games next year...the cupcakes they used to schedule for games 1 & 2 were ridiculous at best...not saying that hawaii will be a power house next year, but at least it ain't east tennessee state....

but anyway..good for OSU and OU.....

    go gators...

War Eagle, it would be nice if it were next year or the year after, by 2016 you may be selling time machines instead of car's..

Hope I can still see by then...

Tennessee-Chattanooga? What is a Chattanooga? What is the logo/mascot? They could not find any suitable D1-A opponent?

Ron: Yea, eight years is a while to wait, but better late than never, I guess. I'm actually surprised that they scheduled a home and home as opposed to a 1-time neutral site game, like the trend appears to be. These neutral site games are a little easier on the logistical side.

Of course, where would be a good place in between the two schools, Kansas? Maybe the Georgia Dome might want to make a bid for it. Wouldn't that be something? Certain venues making bids for big matchups to kick the season off? Yea, yea, I know they used to have these pigskin and kickoff classics, but those were typically one game. What if about five different venues did it? It would kind of be like having some bowl games to start the season.

Nah, probably wouldn't work. You can't have a big event to inaugurate the season. Unless you're NASCAR with the Daytona 500 or something...

Lennie: A Chattanooga is a Choo-choo. The school's mascot is the Moccasins--the snake, not the shoes...

War Eagle Atlanta...The Oklahoma AD should issue an apology to the Sooners fans for scheduling this game, P-E-R-I-O-D!

Thank God, Ramblin. Someone finally gets one of my jokes! They've been flying over everyones's head for the last few weeks.

We all need to be reassured every now and then. Bless you!

War Eagle, glad I could help - and I know just how you feel. I was going to post some sort of remark about "The Crying Game" in response to your misaprehension of Lace Curtain's gender, but I was afraid nobody would get it.

Having an obscure sense of humor is both a blessing and a curse. :-)

Yea, Ramblin, I was the only guy I knew who got most of the references on Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Actually, I didn't hit on anyone, but it's funnier if we let the joke play out that way...

Did somebody say MST3K? We got MST3K fans on here? I don't get it. It'll probably hit me like a ton of bricks when you tell me, but something definitely got lost in the translation.

I was thinking more something out of a 3-acher wood.

Piglet: Hey, ya wanna play football with us?

Eyore: OH, that's OK; I don't mind; thanks for asking me.

(It probably would have suited AR & Army better, but hey…)

Props to the Buckeyes & Sooners. It may not be until 2016, but it'll still be worth the wait. That is, unless they meet in a bowl before then. But, then, given their combined bowl records over the last 5 years, who do you bet on???

If this home and home is as good as the one between Ohio State and Texas then we will all be in for a treat. Sucks that we got to wait that long though.
