Oregon's New Uniforms
The Oregon Ducks have unveiled their newest uniform changes for the upcoming season and apparently the plans for chrome helmets were scrapped. This will be the 4th change in uniforms for the Ducks since 1996. Uniform designs now include black, white and yellow while helmets include white, green and yellow. The yellow helmet design unveiled is apparently just a tentative one.
Pictures and more details are in the extended entry.
The Ducks’ game-day apparel will consist of four different colors of jerseys and pants to go along with three different helmets Oregon is expected to wear at some point during the coming season. But of greater importance is the advanced design and technology of the uniforms will help to diminish the weight of the uniforms by 28 percent when dry and help make them 34 percent lighter under wet condiditions. The jerseys and pants also encompass a diamond-patterned grid on the shoulders and knees, respectively, to improve the durability of the product in areas susceptible to greater wear.
In addition to the green, yellow and white uniforms Oregon has employed in the past, it will add a predominantly black version to the wardrobe similar to the uniforms the Ducks unveiled in last year’s 56-14 win against Oregon State. The option of helmets Oregon will have available will expand from the one green version that it has worn since 1999 to an all-white variety and a third yellow helmet that is still in a developmental stage. The new-look attire also will include "Oregon" inscripted down the left leg of all four pants while "Ducks" will appear on the front of the jerseys above the numbers to help further enhance the identity and exposure for the university.
ESPN and The Helmet Project (specifically the PAC-10 page) have more details.

As a fan of the Ducks I have learned to tolerate the changes and innovations they have made to their uniforms. Instead of emphasizing tradition, the Ducks focus on futuristic innovations. I like Notre Dame too, but when you think about it, they're kind of boring with their same old same old look. So, I say, "Go Ducks!" But please, stay away from hot pink! "On to victory urge the heroes of our Mighty Oregon!"

Besides the hideous numbering, the uniforms are actually not that bad. I thought the idea of three helmets would be bad, but I think the all-white will look fantastic. I'd pair the yellow helmet with the green and yellow uniforms, and put the green helmet with the black uniform. If they're not going to go with traditional numbering, then they should use the numbers from the Oregon State game last year, the ones Mike Bellotti said he didn't like. I like the markings on the sleeves and pants. A unique look.

Another year, another Oregon uniform.
Does this mean the lightning yellow is gone for good? The yellow above does not look so highlighter like in hue as I remember.
I still want to see the lightning yellow uniforms used at Boise.

People say they're crazy they've got diamond plating on their shoulders and knees...well, that's one way to lose those football blues, diamond plating on their shoulders and knees.

I guess when you have NO FOOTBALL TRADITION, it doesn't hurt to have non-traditional uniforms.
These C-USA rejects always remind me of what my high school coach said; "When those modern uniforms go out of style (and they will), so will the teams that wear them.

Old School,
Do your homework...the University of Oregon has been playing for over 106 years. They also have been one of the top programs in the nation over the past 10 years.
We certainly don't have the "tradition" of storied programs ND, USC, PSU or Alabama but we kick a little tail now and then.
I imagine you and your high school coach were equally upset when college football allowed the forward pass and got rid of leather helmets.

The leather helmet comment by The Mayor is right on. And Notre Dame has had subtle uniform changes over the years. Remember the Kelly green unform that Montana wore? Those dark green ones that the Irish wore against USC last year were not "traditional" uniforms. I recently purchased one of the Ducks new green unis and it looks great. I also purchased a black one, and it looks great, too!!!

Ohio State, then just must have "thrown away" all their 'tradition'...
Ohio State football coach Jim Tressell introduced the second new jersey design for OSU in two years.

By the by, is the yellow helmet in the photo THEE
yellow helmet they are gonna wear on the field, or is it a prototype? The green paint used for their more traditional helmets costs 2,500 bucks a gallon. What is the yellow paint gonna cost?DK said:

I don't mind the different uniforms, but I'm not a fan of different helmets. Helmets are such a defining characteristic of a team. The green helmets are awesome and would look great with the white or any other uniforms. Please Ducks, lose that white helmet (and yellow?) and stick with the great helmets you've got!

Sooner fan checking out the Ducks' new uniforms and I think they look good. Looking forward to coming to the game this fall and see another thrilling match between two great football teams. You have great fans as I experienced in San Diego's Holiday Bowl.
Go Ducks, Beat USC!

Sooner Fab
Should be a great game. If you're planning on attending and haven't made arrangements, bad news. There are no decent rooms available that weekend. School is starting up and all the reputable hotels (there are really only 2 in town) have been sold out for ages.
Portland is 2 hours away and traffic down the I-5 is worse than the I-35 from Norman to Dallas on a Friday before OU/UT.
I'll be watching in on TV. Ducks by 4.

I tried getting tickets to the OU/UO game and they were all sold out!!! I have a friend who will try to get me to the game. His brother has been a season ticket holder for years. The best I could do on my own was Portland State versus the Ducks on October 28. PSU is a Division 1-AA school. The Ducks should win by 40 or 50 points. Here's hoping they'll wear the Green jersey with Black pants combo. Or is that the Black jersey and Yellow pants combo? I get confused.

Tony,
The season hasn't started yet you ying yang. Look at all of the articles on this website, none of them deal with actual football. It's all about attendance, arrests, stadiums, coaching changes, more arrests etc.
I believe after the first weekend in September we will all be talking football again.

Come on now Duck Fan, The Viks might just come down and suprise you. Not going out on a limb to predict a victory at this point, but I would expect a good game. The Ducks will be the THIRD 1A (or now "football bowl") team they will play this season, and not the highest ranked.
As for the unis, GO DUCKS, I like the all white for road games. I think the two (or 3) helmets is great, either the road or home uni always looks wrong with just one helmet. PSU had a all white road uni a few years ago, with the white helmet and it looked great. Lets see an ALL LIGHTNING YELLOW helmet/uni combo!!!!
Go Viks,
Go Ducks
Go Beavs,PS living in NC now, I have loved the Beavs beating the heels in the CWS,

I'm not going to pose as a Duck, I'm not. But BLACK UNI'S!!! Will we see Stanford in blue, and WSU in purple soon?? Wearing the most disgusting uniforms in recent history. It's a shame, the old green and yellow that I grew up hating was a pretty sweet and classic look. But with different numbers the white swould look good too.

It's easy to talk smack when you don't have to play them, isn't it? Nice uni's, Chummmmmmm-p.The Monster Q said:

Yeah, Oregon has always had the best jersey combinations in NCAA football since 1999. Since they are located near Beaverton they have always had the newest versions of uniforms, before the rest of the other colleges. I say yeah go ahead, if your school is helping NIKE advertise uniforms while getting some exposure in the process, Go Ducks.

To all you nay sayers who criticize the Ducks innovations in Football gear, I say, you should have been at Autzen on September 2nd as they beat up on poor, lowly Standford. They came out on the field wearing their green uni/helmet combination, and look absolutely intimidating!!! If you want to see what I mean, go to www.goducks.com and click on the Football page under the Teams heading, and then click again on "Photos". The picture of Jonathan Stewart running with the ball is incredible. He looks like a cross between RoboCop and a Gladiator. Truly awe-inspiring!!!

Next they will say, "I only wanna play on a synthetic field, I don't wanna get my pretty uni dirty" Do they remember why their out there? I remember a time when the real men played in the slop and nobody gave a rip how "awesome" the new uniforms were.

As a neutral observer from north of the border, what's wrong with tradition? Plain and simple Oregon's uniforms are butt ugly. Look at Texas, Ohio State, Notre Dame and the coolest uniform of all Michigan's winged helmet and home or road maize and blue have been around forever and are still a treat to the eye. Sadly the list of ugly uniforms continues to grow Oregon State, Miami (what are you thinking), Viginia Tech. Come on pick a design that doesn't want you to chuck your lunch and stick to it.

I have blogged many times on this page defending the Ducks innovations to their uniforms. But after watching the game between OU/UO with my brother, and hearing his comments on how stupid the diamond plating looked, I had to admit...the Ducks' uniforms ARE THE UGLIEST LOOKING UNIFORMS IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL. And then, I was watching the Wisconsin/Michigan game last Saturday, and thought, what great looking uniforms. The red and white of the Badgers and the Maize and Blue of Michigan screamed TRADITION!!! And in college football, it's all about tradition. Leave innovation to the NFL.

One final comment by me on the Ducks and uniforms.
The practice jersey for the Ducks is the one I wish they would wear on Game Day. Dark green uniform, with yellow numbers. That's it, a basic, gridiron looking uniform. A uniform that makes them look like men, and not like a beer can is going to fall from the sky and crush them, like on that beer commericial. Men should not only act like men, they should dress like them too.

Hey, PSU, do YOU play football for the Vikings? Or are you just running off at the mouth??? By the way, if PSU is such a BIG 1-AA Football team, why don't you have your own stadium to play in? Don't get me wrong, I love watching Triple-A Portland Beavers Baseball at PGE Park, but that's my point...IT'S A FREAKING BASEBALL PARK!!! Get your own stadium and then we'll talk!!!

i think it is a little shortsighted to completely dismiss uniforms. they can add a jolt of adrenaline to a team and a crowd. don't believe me? check out clemson a few weeks back vs ga tech. they come out in all purple, the place goes crazy, the players go crazy...they jumped out to an early lead and dominated. was it all b/c of the uniform? well, obviously, no, but it did give clemson a boost of adrenaline to start the game, and their crowd stayed in it, and it definitely played a part. also, the uniforms are a factor for the fans. to just say they dnt matter is a little disrespectful to those of is who are interested in such things...the sal3e of jerseys is no small part of the revenue stream for the universities, so no, they arent just there to play the game in, and thats it. they matter, at least to the fans.
that said, is there anything oregon fans can do? they had a sharp looking uniform in the early 90s and prior. it was a real classic look, classy green and yellow..then nike invvaded, with their neon, vomit yellow and their pointless black uniforms. and what is up with those stupid grid patterns on the shoulders and knees? 1st step, get rid of that pattern. next step, desaturate that yellow. then, ditch the black!
go with that green w/yellow accents, and stop tapering stripes and fonts and just use the old impact numbers, or whatever you want, but those things have to go...
