Surprise: Oregon donning new helmets (again)
After years of running afoul of the uniform police, it looks like the Oregon Ducks are at again. The Oregon Ducks will wear a new helmet design for their Las Vegas Bowl appearance, assuming that the helmets are delivered in time for the game.
The new helmet design has a unique paint job that changes color depending on the angle of the viewer and the lighting at the time and features silver flames below the paint fleck, much like a pimped-out El Camino. But the new look might be a little too new, judging from the response from many of the players.
"They're interesting," offered quarterback Brady Leaf. "I'm a pretty old-fashioned guy, so I just wear what they give me."..
"A couple of people said it looked like tennis balls," receiver James Finley said.
"Honestly, it's hard to say," fellow receiver Jordan Kent said. "I'm speechless as far as the color, I can't quite describe it. It's sort of a lightning yellow but then it fades to a kind of lime-greenish.
"I guess if a duck was yellow, that's what I'd envision it to look like."
"It's lightning something," linebacker Brent Haberly said, with some uncertainty. "I'm not sure. It'll all come together when we put the uniforms on, supposedly."
According to reports, the new helmets will be paired with Oregon's notorious lightning yellow jerseys and lightning yellow pants, a combination that will be a signficant set back to high-def tv sales nationwide.
Other than maybe wanting their players to look like a cross between baby doo-doo and dog vomit -- seriously -- what is Oregon thinking???

Who is responsible for all of his madness? Is it the coach or the AD or what? "If Nike or Reebok comes along and pays for us some new equipment, we might as well wear it once or twice." That must be the policy at Oregon. They've put a couple of good football teams on the field over the last 5 or 6 years, but how is any opponent ever going to take them seriously when they're dressed up like something off of Pimp My Ride?

That is the ugliest helmet I've ever seen. As for all the uniform combinations and the new helmet, I think Oregon expects there to be a catwalk leading up to the field in their Bowl Game and for 2008.

N'ice - but I still like the big ominous "O" on the green helmets the best.
The Las Vegas Bowl is NEXT WEEK! No. 20 BYU -vs- No. 28 Oregon... Its surprising to have a good matchup like that this early in the Bowl Season.
I love it.clemson1981 said:

my god another oregon uni, i think the university should just move move far away from the nike office that sits right accross the street from the school!!! i mean mike bolleti could coach there for the next 25 years and they still would not have used all the uni's they have designed (im not kidding) its around like 256 or something!!! Focus on football not unis!!!

Actually, IMHO, at this point with the Oregon Uniform phenomenon, I have reversed course and am wanting them to just go nuts.
It has gone so far out there, I think I just kinda want to see what happens....
I say Oregon goes all out and dons uniforms directly inspired by "FLASH GORDON" (1980). At this point, why the heck not? LOL

Phil Knight should be made to wear the trash which he makes our kids wear. He is one cheap bastard. If Mr. Sweatshop wants to buy the University, he needs to pay fair value. Knight is a classless donor whose ambition in life has always been to exploit others for his own wealth. Now it looks like in his old age he simply wants to embarrass those who choose to participate in the football program which he professes to love.
One must wonder if Knight will be in the Oregon coaches booth calling the plays as he did in the fourth quarter of the last Las Vegas bowl the Ducks played in. When Knight denies this
(see The Oregonian of 12-10-06) he's lying again.

clemson1981, ladies and Kevin Donahue...and all other Duck haters, you guys are such rural fashion police.
Do you know the connection between UO and Nike?
Without Oregon, there would be no Nike. Pick up the DVD "Without Limits" that will give you the connection in a Hollywood nutshell.
I used to but my shoes at Blue Ribbon Sports in Eugene in the late Sixties, do you even know what BRS means? I was into Tiger Onitsukas...If have I had half a brain, I would have gone to work as a stock boy for Phil Knight and Jeff Hollister for free (well I'd want the stock options of course) and run in those dumbass Nikes that Bowerman designed, I mean we could get them for free back then...and they totally sucked!!!.
Unlike Pre, I was a Tiger Onitsuka guy, not an Addidas Man...unlike Pre I sucked ass at track and cross country. Like Pre, I never wore Nikes....well until 1979, but he was dead by then.
If you knew our history you'd be less judgmental. We created Nike, not the other way around. Knight, Bowerman, Prefontaine...without them, MichaelJordan would have been wearing Converse, Tiger Woods would be a Spaulding rep for $600k a year.
Focus on your own team and quit being the Queer Eye for the Football Guy...
The Oregon players and Oregon coaches, along with some Nike reps design the uniforms...it's not the marketing department at Nike calling the shots, girls.
Look at other schools who have strayed from tradition. Cal, WVU, Oregon State and FSU come to mind, they are all following the Oregon lead.
We don't have a storied football tradition ala USC, Notre Dame, OSU, Michigan, Alabama...so why not be innovators in the uniform department?
Kevin Donahue, your obsession with Oregon uniform trends is getting tiresome and just plain weird. I mean this is what, the third blog in a year about our uniforms?
You picked this article up from the Eugene Register Guard and left out the quote of the player (Findlay) that totally dug the new helmet look. How in the world did you find this link unless you were digging for Oregon trash?
Re-focus your efforts on Florida and OSU my friend, now that's important!
Peace out, Viva Las Vegas...go Ducks.
Unfortunately So Cal, you are right, the BYU Cougars are going to roll us up, that's the smart money. I can only wish they were Magic Helmets, we would wear them against you next year on 10/27 in Eugene...

ah yes so cal you can talk all the trash you want but at least we beat the bruins and well we all know what poor little pete, was thinking as you lost............"damn and the ducks beat these guys?!" We'll see you next october and hell maybe we'll use our magic onside powers to beat you, oh and it must suck to think that we can beat texas in a bowl game and you couldn't.

Let's face it. The Ducks are the "Runway Models" of NCAA football. Let's just hope they still wear panties - as I'd hate to have to get an eyeful of that. Still, I prefer those awful yellow helmuts that they had in the old daze.

I saw these helmets on the new MTV show, "Pimp my uniform." It is where they take older helmets and fix them up, sound systems, DVD players and stuff like that. This helmet actually has a pool table for tailgating before games.
Thanks MTV, for pimping our helmets!Neon-Duck said:

Soooooo, the Oregon Ducks are gonna don new helmets for the Vegas Bowl! I heard they are gonna attach the "O" Logo to the back of their new helmets. Won't that look funky? I thank God I'm also an Irish Fan...that way I can always root for them if Oregon decides to introduce pink as their 5th (or is it 6th) color(?) into their uniform design.

Hmm, all I could find on Rupaul on the net was this:
High School: (GED)
University: San Diego Community CollegeThat was funny and I really wanted it to be true (I thought it could be because who really talks about this antique transgendered black man anymore, aside from which he was very big so maybe he did do sports at one point...).
No one noticed ESPN ran a poll to decide which teams were the best ever in college football? The results were '71 nebraska and '95 nebraska... I saw the poll and knew the setup would cause problems it didn't even use multi stage voting (eliminates a lot of people just voting for thier favorite team in the first round etc.). Apparently everyone in Nebraska voted twice or something because 2001 Miami didn't even make the last round. Herbstreit was mad too, he thought '71 nebraska would have been a total joke if fielded against '01 Miami... I think they would have been a total joke against the top 40 teams in '06! He was also pulling for '04 USC (What a joke) and '05 Texas (I can't see anything THAT great about this team, recent memories must count for more to him).

Wow it looks like Yellowduck has got a yellow streak... A couple of losses and you're ready to turn it in? I'm sure you have been a Duck fan for quite some time, so long in fact that you forgot about a whole hell of alot of 3-8 and 4-7 seasons before we got decent.. The unis are Green and Yellow (for the most part;) )so what's not to like!? At least they're not purple for God's sake... I'm a little scared for Thursday, but hopefully we can get up and get it done..
GO DUCKS!!

I think everyone's opinion of the DUCK uniforms and the new helmet have more to do with people not liking the color yellow... if you look at their design (excluding color), they're about the same look as half the other teams out there. Also, there are no other DUCK mascots, and I can't think of another team with the color combination green/yellow. I get bored with the same old cougar/cat, spartan/trojan, and "Fighting..." mascots.
On top of all that.... the Oregon football players in the past have voted unanimously in favor of their jersey look. If they dig the digs, then it's all good.

Now that the Ducks feathers are all ruffled - LET'S GO DUCKS! Pound BYU! It's time to step up and eat at the table. Problem is: it seems more likely that a Cougar would be eatin' a Duck rather than the other way around....

Hey, Z how many other teams in the NCAA have diamond plating on their shoulders and knees? The Oregon Ducks have their own distinctive look. Nobody in the rest of College Football looks like the Ducks...and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Maybe after this latest humiliation they should just forget about the fashion show - and get back to playing football. This is just getting plain embarassing to watch. BYU is just killing this team. What has happened to Oregon? They are definately going "Fresno" on us.

UWDAWG:
Yep, Huskies or Trojans would have been alot better for him. Those guys are monkeying with the QB position all the time also. Dixon is clearly their best QB. The Leaf experiment has got to stop. The guy can't play - just like Ryan.
This team went into the USC game with a 7-2 record. Since then they have lost to USC 35-10, Arizona 37-10, Oregon State 30-28 and now BYU 38-8. They have been outscored by 14.0-35.0 in the last four games. There is clearly something going wrong there.
The Mayor coined the phrase, "hope we don't be goin' all Fresno", after the USC game. Well, Fresno State went something stupid like 1-10 after playing the Trojans last year. It surely seems as if the Ducks have completely gone in the tank. They better figure it out. BYU is a very good team though. But, they aren't that good.Tommie T

#54..You're right..All the credit in the world to BYU tonight..Unfortunately the PAC-10 has a laid of couple of naotable goose eggs the last couple of years in Bowls they didn't want to be in(CAL-Tex Tech)..But no excuses at all.. they got flat out spanked tonight by a better team(Talent/Dignity/Self-Respect). Bellotti oughta be flogged..Way to send out your seniors!

I don't mean to say that they're not good. You guys know I'm the one who's had them at about #10-12 all year long - and taking some flak for it BTW. I know they're a good team. It's just that they probably are not a National Championship caliber of a team. UWDAWG is right in his assessment that the PAC-10 teams are laying great big eggs during some bowl games. Until someone other than USC starts dominating bowl games - the PAC is gonna continue to suffer from the tag of "lousy conference". These are the games that most people will see. And, these kinda dog games give the PAC a real black eye. This will definately drive down every PAC teams ratings and the overall OOC standing. Oregon needs a new OC and DC. They have too much talent to be blown out in that manner.

Just a thought. Funny how when BYU loses Gary Crowton - they become a powerhouse football program again. And, now that Crowton is the OC at Oregon - the Ducks have completely fallen apart. Anybody think that there might be a common denominator here? Or, is it just me that can't figure it out?

Neon Duck,
Post #46. Yeah I was at the Hard Rock, at 51 it's not my style. I prefer the Bellagio.
Also, it was dead there. Everyone was all amped up about the New Year's concert with Incubus...not a clue on my part.
When it's 50 degrees outside they close the Rehab Bar...but they did have an ice hockey rink going which looked pretty cool.

Ducks are the second winningest program in the Pac 10 over the last 10 years. It's not like OSU is in traditional uniforms anymore either...look to your own house first before casting stones my Beaver friend.

"It also looks stupid to loose with cute little 'O's on your pointless black tape under your eyes."
Do you even watch college football? Do you know the English language? "Loose" is what you call your ex girlfriend, "lose" is when you are outscored by 30 points in Las Vegas.
Oregon, again, was one of the first teams to don the logo patches under the eyes...since November, just about every college football team has jumped on the Duck bandwagon.
I agree the Ducks just sucked this year, but you guys that are so "Queer eye for the Football guy" critics of the Ducks innovations are boorish. Get with it Biff, Marty McFly is way cooler than you.
As Cal Quarterback Nate Longshore said tonight before the Holiday Bowl.."Our uniforms are cool, quit lying to yourself, you know it's true."
Great call Nate! Way to go Bears...go Beavers, Go Trojans!
