49ers eye Carroll as future head coach

The San Francisco 49ers disposed of both their GM and Head Coach on Wednesday afternoon, after a 2-14 season.

Why does this matter to the college football world?

Because none other than John York, owner of the 49ers, hinted that his No. 1 target for a new head coach would be 2005 National Champion and current USC head coach Pete Carroll.

"I think we all watched the game last night. That was a tremendous game," York said. "They were very dominant, and he's a great coach."

Carroll just this week exclaimed that he had zero interest in returning to the NFL, but bolder statements have been made before only to be broken, and that sure isn't going to stop York and the 49ers from trying.

Dave Albee, columnist for the Marin Journal, the city where Carroll is from, said the Trojans head coach has accomplished all he can at SC, and should move on to a bigger challenge, turning around what was one of the top teams in the NFL.

USC may be the second best team in California--pro or college--but I think 'Frisco is setting itself up to be the Notre Dame of the pro ranks if they think they're getting Pistol Pete. Didn't he have a chance for the job 2 years ago?

I can see it now...Carroll to the 49ers starts a chain of dominoes.

Carroll takes Chow with him to San Fran.
Stoops, Saban, and Jimmy Johnson are all rumored to replace Carroll at USC, just because they are interested in evey job.
OJ offers to bring back tailback U.
Arnold Schwartzenhager gets local support, as he does for any opening in California.
The So Cal jet flys to talk to Urban Meyer, but then...

Eveyone realizes this was just a hoax started by some of the PAC-10 teams hoping to get Leinart and Bush to jump to the NFL a little quicker.

The 49ers will wake up and realize they are far from the elite team they used to be and will settle on some re-tread coach that they won't have to pay big money to.
