Huskies Land Valuable QB Recruit
It may be nothing more than words at this point, as high school players are not allowed to actually sign a letter of intent until next February, but Washington Husky fans can rejoice that local boy Jake Locker has decided to become a Dawg.
Locker, a heavily sought after dual-threat QB who can run and pass equally as well, seriously considered offers from USC, Washington State and Oregon State before deciding to stay home and play his college football in Seattle. The list of suitors was even larger, though, with Michigan and Tennessee both having offered him a scholarship. What makes a young man choose a team that had a 1-10 record last year over the team that won the National Championship? "They want their quarterbacks to run around a bit, so that's great," he said of Washington. Locker also looks up to new coach Tyrone Willingham and believes in his system. "I think he's doing all the right things with the program," Locker said. "He's doing what he needs to focus on first off the field before worrying about the wins and losses on the field."
Physically, Jake is 6’ 2” and 210 lbs. He runs a 40-yard dash in the 4.5-4.6 ranger and Scout.com likens him to former standout Washington QB (and now Oakland Raider) Marques Tuiasosopo, but a little bigger and with a stronger arm.
Locker is also considered a top baseball prospect as either a Pitcher or Outfielder and could choose to test the MLB draft waters. He says that he isn’t ruling it out completely, but also has made it clear that football is the sport he loves most. When asked on a local radio station about playing both sports in college, Locker laughed heartily and said that it was definitely an option.
For Washington Husky football fans, Jake Locker could be just what the doctored ordered to help turn around the program’s embarrassing fall from the college football elite. Is there any chance of Locker changing his mind and signing with another school? Not according to Jake.
"I didn't make a decision to go back on it later," he said.
Now that is reason for hope.
