A&M Yell Leader: JoPa on death bed, needs casket
And here you thought we were in for a ho-hum, who cares Alamo Bowl. Nope.
An unidentified Texas A&M Yell Leader was booed by both Penn State and Aggie fans during a pep rally in San Antonio after taking the mic to declare PSU coach Joe Paterno "on his death bed" and "someone needs to find him a casket".
Classy. Classy. Classy.
Texas A&M officials have apologized to Penn State officials and JoPa.
The Aggies have sent the Yell Leader "home with his parents", according to The Patriot News.
Dean Bresciani, A&M vice president for student affairs, later said by phone that all his school's officials were embarrassed by the incident: "We all have the utmost respect for Coach Paterno. Everyone from A&M was just standing there in amazement at what they were seeing."He added that the yell leader, who was sent home with his parents, might have felt worse: "The kid just got carried away. As the words were coming out of his mouth, he was trying to pull them back in. This kid is in tears over what he did."

Ha Ha well if Penn State needed any motivation there it is. But what good would college football be without a little trash talk?
I do agree as well though JoePa is way past his prime it's time for a change in State College. Just funny that this was coming from an Aggie.

I don't know. I've had a lot worse said about me. We are talking about the Fan's pep-rally here; you're supposed to talk bad about the other team and their coaches.
Did this kid's comments cross a line? Arguably.
Was what he said disrespectful? Mmmm, arguably.
Should TX A&M have been embarrassed? No! It was one kid being a kid, for crying out loud.
Should said kid been sent home with his parents? I gotta better idea. Why not hang him from the gallows in the middle of their town's market square! HELLO!!! We are not talking Child Pornography or Murder here, just a few crass comments.
I think the TX A&M fans got it right and made their point with this kid; i.e. Shut the f…ck up and pass the mike. Nuff said!

This is what happens when you allow only hardlegs to be the cheerleaders. Way too much testosterone...
On the other hand, he wasn't saying anything that we on here haven't said or thought. Granted, we don't have the mic in our hand in front of everybody...

Nice win last night...Mack showed some class by not going apoplectic on that dude, though he's probably about ready to fire his "get back" coach...
Seriously, what do you guys think would've happened had a guy like Mangino or Saban been on the sidelines and their (step)kids did that?
Wow...Talk about Vesuvius redux...

My wife is an Aggie, so I have more exposure to A&M than any non-A&M alum would really want. This event is REALLY out of character for Aggies, who seem to pride themselves on good sportsmanship. They won't even boo during games (preferring to "hiss" instead) so booing this moron is a show of good taste on the part of the fans.
Aggies tend to be obnoxious, but they are very polite about it.

Okay...
So let me get this straight...
Making jokes about him being "on his death bed" and needing a "casket" are considered insulting and disrespectful...
But making jokes about this is not?
Seems like 6 of one and half dozen of another to me...
Both of which I find funny...

Evidently, crap jokes are still in bounds. I will say this, though: Making fun of people who have to wear adult diapers is real funny, all the way up to the point when someone you care about has to wear them. Then it's not so funny anymore...
No, I'm not talking about me, smart asses...

I had to laugh at the comment above about this being out of character with A&M. It is completely in character with a second class group of stupid hicks that make up Texas A&M's student and alumni population. Why are they hiding the name of this jerk anyway? Dismissal from the university would be a start at fixing this problem, but A&M needs to do something about their recurring blunders that have made attending the university a dramatic strike against employement. Clearly, this says alot about anyone who would go to this "school". We can expect more of the same next year.

13, gatorhippy - Hahaha, very good point. I think this Aggie yell incident is wayyy overblown. That's the point of a pep rally, talk trash, get pumped up for the game. Obviously, it means nothing, just pre-game chatter...

I have a hard time imagining that PSU fans themselves weren't saying something similar before he snapped his 11 year conference title drought that ended in '05.
The kid probably shouldn't have said it and was punished for it. JoePa didn't care.
This whole thing a big whoopty doo.
and Jerry has some pent up anger, no?

All I know is that the Alamo Bowl should be a snoozer, with these two sub-par teams facing off.
Penn State was hardly competitive in the Little Eleven, and Texas A&M got blown out by my very own 'Canes, whose season was, by Miami standards, inescapably horrific.

It's great to be a Miami Hurricane!
Special thanks to the Aggies for helping us achieve one exciting night at the Orange Bowl this season!!BTHO tu said:

Hey Jerry (17), anybody who knows anything about A&M knows that you're an idiot when you say this was in the character of the Univerity. We are a high-class Univerity with a deep rooted tradition in being the best in everything, including public relations. JoPa himself said that it was "one kid" doing something stupid. Get over it like he did and get ready to watch the Lane-Goodson-McGee show.

Just ran across the video of the comment:
http://www.ksat.com/video/14935573/index.html
It's right at the 1 minute mark.
I suppose a quick explanation of one part of Yell Practice ought to be given and this might seem as uneventful to you as it does to me.
At some point during every Yell Practice the Yell Leaders will go on a bit like this:
"We're going to beat the....school's out for the semester (crowd yells "Whoop")....Fightin' Texas Aggie Wreckin' Crew ("Whoop")....Fightin' Texas Aggie soccer team beating Nebraska ("Whoop").....Mom coming up and doing your laundry ("Whoop")....Mom then stocking your fridge ("Whoop")....etc.
Typically they insert random on-campus organization names that they or their friends are in, feats from other sports teams, or a good natured jab at the opponent (ex. when we play texas: "Austin Police Department" ("WHOOOP!").
After about 8 or 9 different mentionings They finish with: "We're gonna beat the Fightin' Texas Aggie class of 20XX hell outta (insert opponent)!"
He probably shouldn't have taken the good natured jab at JoePa but I've heard far worse things said with far less media attention.

I watched the link above in #26. You can't really understand what the hell the guy is talking about. Why do you have a dual pep ralley anyway? Pep rallies should be strictly partisan, especially considering you talk trash about the other team.
In the video, it didn't really seem like the fans were protesting that much after he made his comments...

#39 I used to think it was Army & Medicine.
The way I look at it he couldnt help it, he's a Aggie, probably cost them the game too in a way.
The folks around here were hoping they would lose after that boy messed up.
BTW so far the teams in bowls with interm or new coaches arent doing too well.

Would someone please explain to us viewers who are not acquainted with Texas A&M tradition what Aggie fans are symbolizing when they hold their hands clasped together like a gun along side their face and angle their bodies awkwardly. What the heck is that weird thing all about? Several of us who were watching Aggie fans during the game are puzzled by this strange action and wonder what happened to the traditional "Gig 'em, Aggie" sign in the past.

I've read that "Gig 'em" may have started with the old Southwest Conference rivalry with TCU, the Horned Frogs. To capture frogs or toads, one would gig them with a contraption on the end of a long stick. To gig 'em and the 12th man are understandable traditions--like UT's Hook 'em Horns, FSU's hatchett, or even Oklahoma's 'YMCA' like "O" "U". But the Aggies do have some other sophmoric ones in addition to the 'hand gun' I asked about.
Aggies fans had a tradition of grabbing their gonads whenever the football team went for the yardage on fourth down as the cry goes out to "squeeze 'em". Along with kissing your date after any Aggie score, these traditions seem straight out of junior high like something devised as icebreakers for the socially inept.

Very nice, boonecrusher! It happened many moons ago before the aggies played TCU, The Horned Frogs. He yelled at his team and said"What are we gonna do to these guys?" And in true aggie fashion, he answered his own question, put up the sign and said "gig 'em aggies".

The "hand gun" as you call it, is an old corps tradition called a wildcat, not sure where the name comes from. It is to show there superiority(military officers carry pistols). In the corps only upperclassmen can do it, but any non-reg can do it. Each class has its own wildcat.

This thread has been...interesting; it's loaded with a variety of perspectives. Now, I love Joe Pa; I'll miss him when he finally retires, but I think AgRyan04 (Post 26) got it right. This whole thing is way over-blown. If anyone had said more than, "Was that called for? Could you have thought of something a little better to say? etc.", to this kid, they're the ones who ought to be slapped. In other words, for those of you who should be listening, leave the friggen kid alone!!!
I can only imagine Joe Pa reacting one way to this. He'd crack a $hit eating grin and shake that infamous finger of his. And that, my friends, would be the end of it.
