Blog chat: Breaking down Pitt-Notre Dame
We've always been a great advocate of college football blogs because they bring a whole new level of discussion to the game. And again, two of the best blogs out there (Blue-Gray Sky and Pitt Sports Blather) show off just what football blogs can do in their Notre Dame-Pitt blog chats (part 1 and part 2and art 3 and part 4).
Elevating the discussion, that's what blog chats are all about. An excerpt:
Chas: How about your guys [at WR]? You have two 6'5" guys but both have been inconsistent.Jay: Four guys to keep an eye out for on our end. Stovall has all the tools – 6'5, big, strong, fast. The big complaint was that he has played, on occasion, smaller than he is.
Pat: One of the tall guys, Samaradzija, has actually been fairly consistent and improved throughout 2004. He had the most number of receptions in the Insight.com bowl.
Chas: Yet, he's behind Stovall as the 3rd WR?
Pat: Stovall has all of the physical tools in the world. He just has been, as you said, inconsistent. Samardzija is a year younger, and really seems like he might take a big leap this season in terms of production. He has excellent hands and runs good routes, which is the quickest way for a WR to get on Weis' good side.
Chas: How are they at blocking downfield?
Pat: Both are obviously big guys. Practice reports mentioned downfield blocking as a drill stressed during fall camp. Stovall has always been pretty good at it. Samardizjia isn't quite as strong, since he is also a pitcher on the baseball team, which limits his ability to bulk up.
Chas: McKnight? Is he mainly a possession guy? Over the middle?
Pat: McKnight is probably the best at downfield blocking on the team now. He's not a possession guy, not a deep threat, more of a jack of all trades type. He can take a 10 yard pass 65 yards through traffic like he did against BYU last season or he can be the guy on the receiving end of a Brady Quinn bomb, although he wasn't used in that regard much last season.
Best Part: The two blogs have a running wager on the game - loser throws up the winner's image of choice. Heh.

Incredible from start to finish. Not only did What a differnce a Head Coach Makes.
Notre Dame look extremely well coached Saturday Night. The amazing thing was the adjustments made during the game on Defense. Point being made here. Verses the last 6 years! After Pitt scored their first TD the Coaches responded well and shut Pitt Down. Coach Weis and the Offense looked incredible. I mean Sharp and crisp and no one in the stadium knew what they were going to do next.
Brady Quinn was awesome and so was Darius Walker. Look out for Jeff Smarzsda and Anthony Fassano. Was that Jerome Bettis playing Fullback again or no it was Rashan Powers ONeal.
Brandon Houye contiued his to earn his way into a top dreaft pick in the NFL of course after he gradutes and get his degree the ND way. Wow he even put out another QB. He should be known as QB KILLER. As he had taken out four that I have scene. Wow can that young cat hit!
We can't wait for the Michigan Game. Good Luck Irish. Keep on growing and improving. We Have the best Coach in America for us. Coach Charlie Weis is the MAN!

The Irish may finally have a coach who is skilled on both sides of the ball. He reminds me of Parsegian whose teams could run and throw and usually defend well. I know its early and we should not get ahead of ourselves, but it has been a long time and we Irish fans have had to endure a lot of crap from those who hate the Irish. Weis so far has been brilliant to get so much more from a team he inherited. The improvement so far has been unbelieveable. I doubt there will be any team out there that will out hit this bunch. GO IRISH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!John said:

The Irish have a new coach with the same outcome,...losing the big games as usual. The fat Charlie Weis is cocky, arrogant...also-ran coach. he thinks it is easy becasue he won in the NFL,well as the buckeyes showed him...you arenot in Kansas anymore fatboy.
Play the wimpy Stanford and down-years Tennessee, AF,Navy. Then come bowl time try to play real football and the Leprechan gets bent over. Just like OSU and MSU did last year, join the Bigten and stop playing lightweights most of the year.
ND sucks, i give props to Quinn, he's pretty good. He is a Buckeye at heart!!!! The rest of the ND family is SLOW.
Weis is fresh from the NFL, Hell...Tressel came from "AA" just a few years ago!! Weis pulled the fat over your eyes!!
