Wideout Lymon likely to miss freshman year on academic snag

Michael Pointer at the Indy Star has learned that star Purdue WR recruit Selwyn Lymon will miss his freshman year of elibility at Purdue thanks to a "B" grade he earned but never received credit for when a sophomore at Fort Wayne North High. This doesn't exactly torpedo the Boilers' high hopes for the 2005 season, but it's not welcome news, as Lymon was their No. 1 in-state recruit and a No. 7 national pick at rivals.com.

My take is that this won't have a major impact on Tiller's gameplanning for this fall, but it sure would have been great to see this kid get some reps and show what he's got as early as possible in his career. It's a shame Lymon's GPA is as low as it must be not to meet even NCAA baseline requirements, but maybe this setback will motivate him to hit the books as hard as the tackling dummies (which he can't use with the team this season, either).

UPDATE (8/10): It looks like Lymon's been admitted to the University, but it's still up to the NCAA's Clearinghouse to review and approve his final admission status, according to Tom Kubat's piece in the Lafayette Journal & Courier. It would be great if he gets in and can contribute to the team, but I hope he still gets some sort of wake-up call on this deal.

UPDATE UPDATE (8/11): Lymon's goose is cooked; Clearinghouse said nope (thanks, FWJG). He's enrolling at Purdue and going work on getting his grades up (and maintaining conditioning). I guess I'm encouraged by Tiller's quote that “In my opinion, he’s not a reach...he’s a very capable student.” Purdue will still have some good stock in WR to test out this year; it should be a breakout season for speedster Dorien Bryant and "tall target" Kyle Ingraham.

Sounds like there is a bit more to the story, as to why he didn't recieve that grade. If it was a simple mistake, perhaps he (Lymon) would be fighting tooth-n-nail to regain his year. Why is he letting this happen ????

    Apparently the grade didn't transfer:

"Lymon transferred to Harding before his junior year, and it was his understanding the NCAA would count the two-credit class toward its core requirement. The NCAA counted it as an elective, Lymon said."

Still, you shouldn't let one criminology class grade make the difference as to whether you play or miss an entire year. He must've gotten a fair number of sub-B grades elsewhere, otherwise this would be a non-issue. Sounds like he didn't apply himself quite a few other times.
