Win makes Rutgers bowl eligible for first time in 13 years

Rutgers clinched their first winning season since 1992 with a win over Navy this weekend, making the perennial Big East door mat Bowl eligible for the first time in head coach Greg Schiano's five year term.

The State College of New Jersey certainly didn't make things easy getting this far, with a Quarterback controversy that could have dragged the team down into the mud.

At 6-2 overall with a 3-1 record in conference, Rutgers still has a difficult game at Louisville ahead next month, as well as clashes at home against South Florida and Cincinnati. But not much will take the bloom off this victory, and the Scarlet Knights long suffering fans took every opportunity to enjoy themselves.

The 6-2 start is also the teams best eight game start to as season since the Carter Administration.

    Yo Josh,

Been following this blog a bit lately, as someone who's interested in how Rutgers' football team is positioned in the Big East. Never thought I'd be saying that -- Rutgers being positioned anywhere but the bottom -- but there you go.

Anyway, just wanted to correct you. Rutgers is the State University of NJ, not the State College. There are at least five or six State Colleges, but Rutgers is the only State U. I realize that's of little consequence, but I figured I'd chime in. :)

Also, I've added the RSS for this blog to LiveJournal for the whole community to read. Thanks! (Right now, it's a "whole community" of 1 reading it, but figured I'd let you know.)

Go Rutgers!?!?! (My cynicism has me predicting a 6-5 season, but even that is an improvement, especially given Schiano's schizophrenic QB decisions.)

    -Mike

As a fan of Big East football, it is good to see Rutgers get bowl eligible.

Thank you Isabellle, for your classy respect for the RU opposition. Good luck to WVU the rest of the way as well.

The Scarlet Knights have been lucky this year -- catching Pitt before they got their feet under them and UConn with injured quarterbacks -- but good also. But it is how this all affects the RU recruiting effort that is what will be most telling. If Schiano can keep the three and four star NJ prospects instead of watching them go to Penn State, Notre Dame and Iowa, the upside potential is enormous. Consider this: NJ has about 4 times the population of West Virginia and only 1 division one football team.

    Interesting indeed.
