Rutgers students getting $300 to attend bowl game

The Rutgers football team had a great season, but it looks like it's the Rutgers students who are reaping the biggest rewards:

About 275 Rutgers students will be randomly selected to receive $300 stipends for travel expenses to the Dec. 27 game in Phoenix. The game against Arizona State is only Rutgers' second bowl appearance and its first in 27 years.

"The university encourages students to support the football team at the Insight Bowl. Events like these enrich the college experience," said Gregory Blimling, Rutgers' vice president for student affairs.

The travel money comes from more than $85,000 donated by alumni and others, including a $25,000 state donation authorized by acting Gov. Richard J. Codey.

The Big East will rise like the phoenix and set fire to the desert!

    Come on Knights...Get out there!

Dear WVU...I could really use that $300 New Year's Eve in Hotlanta.

That is a fantastic idea, if you ask me. Sure, it'll hurt the "bottom line." But to give 300 students who may not have gone to the bowl game the opportunity to go and experience it is better than a healthy bottom line.

That, and it'll put some support for Rutgers in the stands, since it's practically a home game for Arizona State! Go Knights!

While it is a great idea, what about this scenario?

Fan gets $300...spends nearly all of it on alcohol... lapses into a coma/dies and Rutgers has one hell of a lawsuit on their hands. Ouch...

Thanks for the support guys. Due to it being such a great distance between Rutgers and Phoenix, only about 700-800 applied for this aid. Fortunately in my case, everyone who is traveling out there with me applied, and we now have $600 to make the trip. We were planning to make the trip anyway, but this is obviously a huge boost.

As for the alcohol scenario, the money is a reimbursment based on receipts. If the money a student or students saved goes towards alcohol, thats their own doing. I doubt anything to such an effect would happen.

I am a Rutgers student who attended the game. Due to the cost of the trip, I was not planning on attending at first because it would have cost me at least $600. I'm sure that is the main reason why most students originally did not plan on attending. To say we'd spend the whole $300 on alcohol is offensive. We are young adults who enjoy football. If we wanted to drink we would stay at home. We are also to smart to spend $300 on alcohol. You can get a large bottle of vodka for well under $50.
