Questions for Mississippi State

Following the loss to Houston, Chris Lawrence is beginning to question whether Mississippi State will be able to break into the win column in a pretty good post entitled, Mississippi State: 0-12?

For full disclosure, Chris may have a vested interest in two of the games left on the MSU schedule (Ole Miss & Memphis) but that doesn't matter in the is case at all. Chris is right...MSU may very have taken the moniker "Vandy of the West" to a new level.

One caveat: if State is 0-11 going into the Egg Bowl, they will almost certainly finish 1-11. The Rebels have this annoying habit of playing down to their competition in "gimme" games.

How long will it be before we call Vandy the Mississippi State of the east? Funny how things change, it was just three years ago that Miss State had the number #2 defense in the nation.

I am a HUGE State fan, and I thought of this yesterday myself. I think that 0-12 is a real possibility now. I think that the program will be devastated for the next 5 years if that were to occur- but I don't see how State can possibly win more than 4 of the next 9, and 3 out of those 4 are going to be stiff competition.

Here's a question: If State loses to Vandy, does Jackie even last out the rest of the season? I know canning a college coach mid-season is generally a bad idea, but losing to Vandy would be the ultimate humiliation for the Bulldogs. If I were one of the higher-ups in Starkville, I might be chatting with some out-of-work coaches NOW about stepping in. (They might start by hitting a few strip joints and looking for Mr. Price :) )

Heh, Mike Price might not be a bad choice. It would really burn the Alabama faithful if he outperformed Shula in the job, too.

I hate to even suggest it for fear that someone might actually read this and then I'd be crying in my beer for years to come, but...

If State starts looking for a coach, is there any chance that they look at FSU Associate Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator Mickey Andrews? I think the track record of former FSU coaches (Richt @ UGA & Amato @ NC State) would seem to indicate that it might not be a bad idea.

That being said, I'm still hoping that Andrews is the eventual successor to Saint Bobby, but not for a couple more years!

The death knell for Jackie is going to be the NCAA's findings that are due in October. I don't care if they beat LSU next weekend- when that report comes in Jackie is toast. According to the NCAA, it appears that the program is out of bounds, citing a "lack of institutional control".

In the past, Jackie always seemed to be able to manage the rule-breaking and lawless nature of the program and could be counted on to turn in a respectable record at least 2 out of every 3 years. Now, the program is in the depths of despair. There is no tolerance for infractions when you can't even be competitive. That's the reality of the situation. MSU hasn't been competitive for 3 years now.

Randy, good point on the NCAA findings. I didn't realize they were due to come in that soon.

The truth of the matter is that Alabama fans (by and large) don't have anything against Price. I think that we want him to succeed (although not at our expense). Seeing him do better than Shula isn't going to make us any more irked than anyone else doing better than Shula at MSU.

Here is a good post for the MSU fans on why Sherrill should be supported this season- I'll be biting my tongue and thanking him for what he has done in the past after reading this- even if it may be time for him to move on this year.
