Manning Wins Unitas Award
For all of you who think Jason White should be clearing a place in this trophy case for the Heisman, think again.
In a possible sign of things to come Eli Manning was awarded the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Thursday as college football's top senior quarterback.
Manning beat out J.P. Losman of Tulane, John Navarre of Michigan, Philip Rivers of North Carolina State, Matt Schaub of Virginia, B.J. Symons of Texas Tech, and Jason White of Oklahoma.
I think this is probably more of a statement about Manning's career than just this year. He's a proven leader, and this season he has taken Ole Miss on his back. If White didn't play QB for Oklahoma it wouldn't matter. If Manning left Ole Miss, they'd be dead in the water. Their whole team's composition would be different without Eli in there running the huddle.
This may be seen by some as a predictor for the Heisman voting, but I'm not sure that the Unitas isn't a consolation prize for Eli. Its interesting to note that Peyton Manning also won the Unitas but not the Heisman.
