Is there a QB controversy in Columbia?
Southern Pigskin has a great post about the QB situation at South Carolina.
After leading South Carolina to a huge win over South Florida, sophomore Syvelle Newton is being pushed by fans & pundits to take the reins at QB. Newton started for the injured Dondrial Pinkins and went nuts on the Bulls, completing 13-23 passing for 323 yards and three touchdowns. He instantly became a savior to 'Cocks fans - the first USC quarterback to throw for 300+ yards since 1972.
Overnight the USC faithful have completely written off Pinkins, who has the misfortune of being remembered for "blowing" the Georgia game with a late fumble that stymied South Carolina's chance to score.
"When the starter is healthy, you put him out there," Newton said. "You don't discourage the starter. ... Dondrial is just the starting quarterback, once again, you can't go beyond that."
With Troy looming on the schedule and Newton pushing for his job, Pinkins may still be on the shelf with his injury. Despite his reputation for being exceptionally loyal to upperclassmen, Holtz says he'll go with whomever gives his team the best chance to win. How much rope will the Holtz give Pinkins? Better yet, how much rope will USC fans give Holtz if he doesn't play Newton?
