Tennessee Update

Simon done for season
Junior middle line-back Kevin Simon's season came to end Saturday night against the Gators. An MRI revealed that Simon tore his left ACL and that season-ending surgery is required.

Simon has been replaced on the defensive line by John Poe and Jason Mitchell. Mitchell has been getting some work and middle linebacker this week, but says he expects Poe to get the starting nod this Saturday.

Who will start at QB?
Reports out of the Tennessee camp yesterday indicated that Jason Shaeffer would start at QB for the Vols this week against Louisiana Tech. However, reports today have head coach Phillip Fulmer saying, "One of them will " without indicating who the starter might be.

Offensive line earns praise
After one series of "razzle, dazzle" in the first quarter against the Gators Saturday night, the Vols went to a smash-mouth, running game in their 30-28 win over the Gators.

The play of the offensive line has earned the praise of Fulmer and junior running back Gerald Riggs, Jr. Riggs called the play of the line the best he's seen "in a long, long time."

Fulmer's gambles
Columnist Jimmy Hyams
has an interesting article about head coach Phillip Fulmer's gambles against Florida Saturday night and how they swung momentum in the game and possibly the season.

Stirring the pot one more time
USA Today's Erick Smith's college football picks column is the latest to bash SEC officiating.

"Florida State and Michigan were casualties by their own wounds. But you have to feel for LSU and Florida. Both became victims of the latest in the long line of SEC officiating fiascos.

The Tigers were hurt by a questionable call that allowed Auburn to kick the game-winning PAT. Defender Ronnie Prude was judged to have committed a personal foul for landing on an Auburn player while trying to block the kick. John Vaughn made the most of his second chance and converted the final point in a 10-9 win.

The Gators suffered a worse fate. Not only did they get a bad call with the lone personal foul when receiver Dallas Baker got in a scuffle with defensive back Jonathan Wade. But then the referees failed to wind the clock in the final minute when the ball was set for play, allowing Tennessee to save 25 seconds and earn enough time to kick a game-winning field goal.

SEC coordinator of officials Bobby Gaston acknowledged the LSU call was questionable and admitted the mistake against Florida, but that is of little consolation — both teams now face uphill fights in the SEC and on the road to Miami."
