Tennessee 42, Lousiana Tech 17

For one quarter Saturday night, the Tennessee Volunteers looked poised for a letdown following their last-second win over the Florida Gators last week. But then the Vols righted the ship when freshman quarterback Eric Ainge connected with reciever Bret Smith for a 60 yard TD pass to give Tennessee its first lead of the game at 21-14 and the Vols never looked back, routing Lousisana Tech 42-17 before a Homecoming crowd of over 104,000 at Neyland Stadium.

The game was very much in question in the early goings of the contest.
The Vols were sluggish in the first quarter on both sides of the ball. The Volunteer defense allowed the Bulldogs to drive down the field 97 yards for the opening touchdown of the game before they woke up.

And just like last week, the catalyst for the comeback was freshman quarterback Eric Ainge. Ainge stepped into the game on the Vol's third offensive series of the night and handed the ball off twice to Cedric Houston. Houston took the ball 36 yards on the first carry and then broke up the middle for 37 yards and a tying touchdown on the second.

But just as quickly, the Bulldogs answered, taking the ball to the end zone again for a 17-7 lead. The Volunteers answered with an 8o-yard touchdown drive of their own, capped off by a 13-yard pass from Ainge to Fayton.

The Vols broke the game open late in the second quarter when Ainge connected with Smith for 60 yards and a touchdown and the Volunteers never looked back. The Vols led 28-14 at the half and scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter as they routed Lousiana Tech 42-17.

The Vols got two one-hundred rushers in the game. Houston and Gerald Rigg, Jr. both rushed 16 times with Houston gaining 160 yards and Riggs gaining 118. Box Score.
