Tennessee Update

The Vols continue preparations for their showdown Saturday night with the Auburn Tigers. Odds-makers have the current line favoring the Vols by 2 and 1/2, which means it could be anyone's game.

Freshman QBs talk to the media
After limiting media access to his two freshman QBs for much of the early season, Volunteer head football coach Phillip Fulmer allowed the media to speak with Eric Ainge and Brent Schaeffer yesterday. The good news for Vol fans is that both still appear to be willing and content to share the role as starter.

In this morning's Tennessean, Ainge said, "'The fact that it says Schaeffer is 3-0 (as a starter), that kind of stuff really doesn't bother me at all,''

Ainge is currently ranked first in the SEC and foruth nationally in passing efficieny.

''Being a competitor, you always want to be on the field,'' Schaeffer said. ''But we're winning the games, so you have to root your team on. I want to win regardless of who's in there.''

While many fans and the media (myself included) have called for Fulmer to start Ainge in this Saturday's contest, Fulmer is playing his cards close to the vest. He hasn't named a starter yet and it's been rumored that he will go with Shaeffer first and then Ainge. I guess if ain't broke, don't fix it.

It would be pretty stupid for Fulmer to make any announcement before game time, even if he has decided what he is going to do. Force the Auburn defense to come out guessing.

I also expect that he will keep the two QB rotation like it is for the George and Auburn games because it takes a little bit of the pressure off each of the QBs. If they can't get it done, it won't neccessarily cost the team. Plus it forces the defenses to prepare for both. But after the Georgia game I would not be surprised to see one of the QBs begin to dominate the playing time a little more.

Ainge has been named the starter, per ESPN and the AP.
