SEC Round-Up/Commentary

Georgia 45, LSU 16
For the first time this season, the Georgia Bulldogs looked like a national championship contendor. The Bulldogs got revenge for the LSU's two game-sweep last year Saturday afternoon in a rout, 45-16. The Bulldogs took advantage of LSU's mistakes to build up a virtually insurmountable halftime lead and then poured on points for victory in the second half as they await Tennessee next week in a showdown for the inside track in the SEC East.

Georgia's David Green completed only ten passes, but five of them were for touchdowns.

Florida 45, Arkansas 30
The Florida Gators
built up a huge first-half lead and then hung onto it for dear life Saturday against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Trailing 35-7 at halftime, the Razorbacks put on a gritty, determined comback effort, led by solid defense and the play of quarterback Matt Jones.

The Razorbacks pulled within eight of the Gators late in the contest and after holding the Gators to three and out were driving down the field. That was until Florida's Channing Crowder picked off Jones' pass on second-and-twelve, returning it for 21 yards. Chris Leak and the Florida offesne then marched down the field, taking time off the clock and scoring a touchdown with a little over a minute left to seal the victory for the Gators.

Once again, the Gators offense was good in spurts, but couldn't sustain momentum for an entire game. Leak looked like a world-beater in the second-quarter, before being held virtually in check for most of the second half by the Razorback defense.

South Carolina 20, Alabama 3
The loss of Brody Croyle hurt the Crimson Tide again Saturday night as they fell to the South Carolina Gamecocks, 20-3.

The game was close at halftime with the Gamecocks only up by three. But in the third quarter, backup quarterback Syvelle Newton rushed for two touchdowns to give the Gamecocks a victory on the road. The Tide also gave up four intereceptions to the Gamecocks to help seal the deal.

The win moves the Gamecocks to 4-1 on the season and into the top 25 for the first time this year. (Don't expect them to stay long as they still have to face Tennessee, Florida and in-state rival Clemson in the home stretch of their season).

Vanderbilt 31, Mississippi State 13
The battle for the bottom of the barrel took place Saturday night in Nashville, with the Vanderbilt Commodores snapping an SEC losing streak against the Mississippi State Bulldogs 31-13. Vandy took the lead early in the second quarter and poured on 21 points in the quarter and then cruised to their first victory of the year.

Other SEC Scores
Ohio 28, Kentucky 16
Ole Miss 28, Arkansas St 21
