Who is Bret Smith?

Volunteer sophomore wide reciever Bret Smith lets his playing do the talking--literally.

The only thing that Smith appears to do better than catching touchdown passes is avoid the media. So far, Smith has not granted any interviews to the media or participated in pre- or post-game question and answer sessions.

What he's done on the field is catch at least one TD pass in three of the first five games and he leads the team in touchdown receptions this season.

So who is this enigmatic wide reciever for the Vols? The Tennessean's Chris Low probes that question in this morning's article about the wide reciever.

'I've known Bret since we were in the third grade, and he's just always been quiet,'' said cornerback Roshaun Fellows, a high school teammate of Smith's in Warren, Ark. ''Even when we were little kids, he didn't go out there and trash talk or anything.

''He doesn't like telling everybody how good he is, but everybody still knows. He's always been quiet. But when the lights come on, he's a superstar. He always has been and always will be.''

I know Bret very well. He is like a big brother to me. He is all the things that Roshaun said and much, much more.
