Writing About Football
The University of Florida offers a class called "Writing About Football" that attracts both Gator players and other students. Dr. Kevin McCarthy has taught the course for the last half-dozen years during the fall semester - had it been offered when I was there for grad school I probably would have tried to take it myself. From a Gainesville Sun story: "Each Tuesday following a game, McCarthy and students have a five minute discussion about the previous contest. There is one stipulation: nothing negative can be said directly about any players or coaches. 'It gives the athletes the chance to explain strategy,' McCarthy said. 'They are often good speakers, and it gives them a chance to articulate and not just be football players.'"
Another basketweaving class? Perhaps, although students do have to write a minimum of 6,000 words in a total of six essays.
