Spurrier contacted about UF opening
ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported this morning that the University of Florida has approached ex-head football coach Steve Spurrier about returning to the sidelines with the Gators next season.
Mortensen reports that Spurrier has two weeks to indicate whether or not he's interested in the head coaching vacancy to Florida officials. It is reported that this is not a formal offer nor have conditions such as salary been discussed.

I think he will probably take the job at Florida (but maybe not who knows?). I know there are many rumors in South Carolina that Lou will resign and Spurrier taking the job there but I rely don't see that happening. Although, I have also heard he is building a lake house in South Carolina and that he likes golf ( if he coaches at USC he would probably get a membership to Augusta National, Hootie Johnson is a former USC football player ).
Still, Spurrier taking the Florida job looks like a greater probability.

Well, let's look at some of the better coaches in around today--Fulmer, Stoopes and Richt. All three were assistants before being hired to be head coaches and they've all arguably had great success. So why not go after a good assistant?

Fulmer is fast getting a sleazy reputation when it comes to player arrests, academics and recruiting (I think he's even been sued over it), Stoops is in a much better situation at OU, and Richt is very lovey-dovey with President at Georgia and likely wouldn't bolt for rival #1.
However, I don't fault them for only looking at head coaches. The last three national championship coaches had solid head coaching experience before being hired (Pete Carroll at USC, Saban at LSU, and Tressel at OSU). Any coaching hire is a gamble, but a proven coach is a surer bet.

And I also think you're missing my point--each of the coaches I pointed out were NOT head coaches before they got the call. I think UF is limiting the search too much and it will come back to bite them.
