Players organize "Hire Zook" rally, no one shows
Three police officers, nearly 30 reporters, five TV cameras, 10 photographers and dozens of fans showed up for a "Hire Ron Zook" rally organized by the Florida football team. The only ones missing were the players that organized the rally.
The plans had been detailed in a letter faxed to a Gainesville radio station Monday morning: Florida's football team would march from outside of the O'Connell Center across campus to the office of President Bernie Machen, where they would demand Zook be rehired.
"We have a voice," said the two-page letter, written by recent Florida graduate Coleen Martinez and endorsed by 24 players. "We have played our hearts out for you and you have turned around and heckled us, criticized us, and have had our coach fired mid-season. Hear us now. We want to keep our coach."
After learning about the letter & protest, Zook approached some of the players to tell them that simply beating FSU was enough for him.
I can only assume that the players heard him say this and agreed. So, as you were, everybody back to 'Fire Ron Zook'.
