Spurrier Assembles Staff
Reports indicate that Steve Spurrier, Jr. will leave Arizona to become the receivers coach at South Carolina. Mark Smith will reportedly leave the Redskins (he previously was at Florida) to be strength coach for the Gamecocks. Another Spurrier confidant, Jamie Speronis, will become Director of Football Operations.
Candidates for Defensive Coordinator include Jim Collins at Marshall, Jon Hoke from the Houston Texans and Charlie Strong at Florida.
Spurrier has said 3 current assistants will remain at Carolina - Rick Stockstill, David Reaves and Ron Cooper. Reaves is the son of former Florida assistant John Reaves and will probably be assistant quarterback coach. Stockstill will recruit the state of South Carolina but position assignments for him and Cooper are undetermined at this point.
Other assistants on the current staff (including Skip Holtz and Rick Minter) received letters telling them they probably would not be retained.
