Tennessee Update
Clausen named starter for Cotton Bowl
Coach Phillip Fulmer named Rick Clausen the starter for the Vol's game against Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl, the Tennessean reports.
However, expect the Vols to put in several packages for freshman quarterback Brent Shaeffer, who is expected to be available for the game. Shaeffer injured his shoulder in a win over South Carolina.
Despite being "rusty" in practice, offensive coordinator Randy Sanders sees a role for Shaeffer in the Cotton Bowl.
''I think we can get a good bit out of Brent,'' Sanders said. ''I don't expect him to be able to go out there and run 70 plays or 80 plays like I expect Rick to be able to do. But I do expect him to have a package he can manage very well.
Freshman quarterback Eric Ainge is not expected to play in the game.
Vols pick up LB commitment
Pennsylvania line backer Andre Mathis has commited to play for the Vols next year. At 6 foot 1, 224 lbs, Mathis is rated the seventh overall linebacker in the country by Rivals.com.
Mathis made his official visit last weekend to Tennessee. He chose the Volunteers over Ohio State, Florida and Michigan State.
In other recruiting news, the Vols signed Todd Cox and Malcolm Rawls out of Memphis. These signing bring the Vols' signings to 14.
Will Allen go pro?
Vols' junior safety Jason Allen has filed a request with the NFL Draft Advisory board to see where he might go in the 2005 NFL draft.
In this morning's Tennessean Allen insisted that this is not high on his priority list right now, but he's just keeping all of his options open.
Allen says he and the team are focused on playing Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Day.
