College Football's Most Hated Results
As part of Fanblogs' participation in AOL Radio's Sports Bloggers Live this Thursday, I am posting a poll regarding the most hated figures in college football. Click here to vote.
The show will focus on Most Hated Athletes in all sports and I will be on to discuss college football. We limited the choices to coaches and televsion analysts since college football is unique in the fact that players are only on the field for 4 years at most. Amid discussions with other college football fans, including another Fanblogs author, I decided there weren't really many choices for current college players. Had he not been dumped from the team, Marcus Vick would have definitely made the list. However, in general the object of hate in college football is directed at coaches since they most embody the program and all fans have their list of disliked talking heads on Saturday television.
The show will be available on demand around 5 p.m. EST Thursday at the show's website. Voting will continue through Thursday here.
UPDATE: If you hadn't heard the results from last week's poll you can see and hear them still. MisterIrrelevant.com has a roundup of the voting in all of the categories and you can listen to the whole 60-minute show or just listen to the 5 minutes with Jeff Quinton of Fanblogs.com.
The Top 3:
1. Steve Spurrier
2. Bobby Bowden
3. Mark May/Phillip Fulmer (tie)

I hate anyone who is a USC Trojan or a fan of the USC Trojans. I hate any team that might be better than my pathetic team is. I hate the Pac-10 because we can't beat their teams. I hate Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush because they all won the Heisman Trophy. I'm going to be hating JD Booty, Dwayne Jarrett, Stafon Johnson, Patrick Turner, Mark Sanchez and Vidal Hazelton because they are all likely to win more Heisman Trophies.
And, above all, I hate my own lousy SEC Conference that is all hype and can barely beat any team from the Pac-10 or any other BCS Conference for that matter. God, I wish that I had what it took to be a Trojan! But, alas, I am just another SEC loser!SEC Fan

I'd have to say any coach that deliberately runs up the score for no logical reason - Mike Leach, this means you...I don't care what kind of offense you run, we all know you are desperate for attention to be running up scores and having polls come out asking "Will Texas Tech score more than 100 points against Sam Houston State?"
This guy needs to be taken behind the woodshed...
Les Miles also irked me in the past year's Peach Bowl. Come on...up by nearly 30 points in the 3rd Quarter and pulling a fake field goal? Gimme a break.
Lots of people would say Steve Spurrier, but he has been remarkably tame ever since being humbled in the No Fun League.
As far as announcers go, I'd have to say Mark May (now that Trev is gone). Although he didn't rile me personally up any (and I can certainly respect his Pitt spirit), his tirades against Notre Dame and West Virginia do get rather tiresome despite how good he may be as an analyst.
Right now, though, all in all, it seems kinda tame altogether out there. Most coaches seem to be stand-up people nowadays, which is a good thing (I guess...)

As far as coaches there are many to hate. However, I would like to talk about some fans that are hated. Being a Miami fan I know that a big part of the fun in college football is the trash talking. Every year I give it and take it from my buddies (took it more this year than gave it) but Ga. Tech fans to me are the worst. I give it up to the team for coming to Coral Gabels this year and spanking us BUT, those fans walk around with their noses up in the air like they dont stink and everytime they get beat by Eastern Kentucky or someone like that its the Ref's fault. In basketball the refs hate them and dont give them a fair game. Its always something with those stuck up yellowjackets. Cry Cry Cry complain complain complain. I know rooting for south florida I dont have much room to talk but, we dont have a felon on our team much less one that plays. The guy got caught with over 100 pounds of weed in his car and said he did not know how it got there? Dude, come on...... I was under the assumption you had to be smart to get into Tech.........

I would have to say Mark May and Ivan Maisel. Only because these two guys HATE Notre Dame. Mark May, would probably cheer if Notre Dame's plane went down. And As for Ivan Masiel, he wrote his famous artiticle in Dec of 2004, when Urban Myer decided to coach Florida, "that is the day Notre Dame football officially died". That's the reason for me. As for coaches running up scores and 18-19 kids making mistakes off the field. That's life, as long as the kids are getting an education and the coaches are running a clean program it's all good. Trust me, there are a few schools out there that I don't like....But it's Mark May and Ivan Maisel for me.

Hands down! Bill Callahan at Nebraska. This clown has dismantled one of the greatest machines ever concocted in college football. There was nothing more frightening than Nebraska's vaunted "Power-I" formation. They would line it up, you knew the play was coming, and could never stop it. Smash-Mouth football at it's finest. This guy has ripped-off Nebraska's identity for some nonsense of trying to create his own legacy. This is the kinda guy who has to take something that works and has to try and fix it. His record over the last two years is 13-10 and Nebraska is barely outscoring the opposition, 24.8-23.9. Not impressive at all. But, true arrogance none the less.
I had a little girlfriend out in Lincoln back between 1980 and 1983 and spent alot of time in Lincoln. I learned to love Nebraska football. Tom Osborne had to retire eventually. So, Frank Solich(Osborne's longtime understudy) takes over and leads Nebraska to a 59-19 record over six seasons. That's about a 10-3 average year while outscoring the opposition 32.5-17.4. A much better coach who understood Nebraska football alot more than Callahan ever will. Was Solich a bad recruiter? I think not. While his 1st recruiting class were juniors Nebraska went 10-2 and while they were seniors the record was 11-2. In 2002 Nebraska slipped to 7-7, but bounced back in 2003, to produce a record of 10-3 - outscoring the opposition 24.8 to 14.5. That was the last year of the "Black Shirt" defense and Solich was let go for this clown.
What Nebraska really needs is for Tommie Frazier to be installed as Head Coach and for this guy Callahan to be shown the door. Nebraska will never return to their rightful seat at the "table of college football" until they return to the fundamentals that makes Nebraska football what it always has been. Some cheap gimmicky "circus show" that is a hybrid of Texas Tech, BYU and Boise State all rolled into one is not gonna get it done against teams like Texas and Oklahoma.Tommie Trojan

Announcers:
Desmond Howard- Maize and blue homer, doesn't add anything insightfulAndre Ware- talks about himself too much, boring
John Mackovic- crawl back under your rock
Coaching Unemployed Bowden (can't remember his 1st name-Terry?)- looks like a chipmunk

Phil Fulmer is another coach that likes to run up the score. I remeber the Citrus Bowl vs. Michigan. The Vols are up by 28 or so in the 4th quarter, Phil not only keeps all the starters in but still continues to throw deep.

Wow Regan thanks for your comments, Mike Leach plays the same way the entire game regardless of the score, every team knows he plays this way so they don't have to sign up to play us if they don't want to. Example SMU coach, whatever his name is, who ran up like he wanted to fight him should be the most hated coach, cry babies like that are a disgrace to sports not coach Leah. Take him behind the woodshed? Please tell me you are 80 years old. Again thanks for your comments grandpa.

And the winner is.... STEVE SPURRIER!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS. Spurriers comments (after winning),"Oh don't worry about the small wins. We are rebuilding right now and pretty soon we will be blowing out teams 100-0 again."
BTW: Regan, it is known that Les Miles didn't make that call in the 3rd. The kids on the feild made that one. However, he didn't look too upset about it and it just shows lack of discipline in my opinion.

So isn't the point of college football to root for something you love, not hate?
You love your school, you cheer for what you love, what you were a part of for four (or in some cases more) years of your life.
Why bring negativity to it?Yes, there are some aspects to college football, like the individuals who bring it down, but there are SO many who do good things for it, and bring positive aspects to it and just good fun to it, like winning and learning of life.
So why bring it down - just have fun with it. Isn't that what most of the student athletes are trying to do? (trying being the opporitive word here)
No one is perfect, and certainly not you or any coach, or announcer simply just doing his job and trying to do his best for a sport we love so much. And everyday we just criticise them.
So to that I just say, good luck to you when you will go on a show attempting to make others look bad, and the end the only person who will look bad is you. What kind of spirit is that?

Mark May just thinks he knows everything...he comes across like a pompous (donkey). Lou Holtz doesn't have a clue and needs to take the marbles out of his mouth. What about Steve Pederson, the AD at Nebraska (fires a 10-3 coach and doesn't have a clue who he's going to hire, then proceeds to interview an endless parade of clowns in sheer desparation)? I think he ended up hiring the right guy, but what an idiot!
Maybe Rick Nuehiesal. Where is he now anyway?
Mostly the coaches are pretty good, non-controversial, respectful.

I hate Mark May as well. He is in denial over his alma mater and ND and WVU are easy targets of his frustration now that those games will likely no longer be competitive. Pitt can build that wall around western PA all they want but as long as Wanny is the coach, they will have no heart.

In defense of Trev Alberts: Trev Alberts is as rational fair-minded wholesome and intelligent all Americana college football player as there ever was. Nothing but a complete class act. Even as an ESPN analyst he was more open minded about all conference than any of his cohorts. I mean how can you single him out compared to Mark May or Lee Corso or even Lou Holtz for that matter?

So yah he's a bastard for doing it....but there are plenty of other bastards in the NCAA football program.
Maybe he's a prick for doing it, but its still funny.

Les didn't call the fake field goal. It was the inside Linebacker, Cameron Vaughn who audibled.
After the play, if you read miles lips, he said "Cam, you have no future in coaching." Cam just wasn't thinking, he saw what they taught him in practice to look for to call the audible.
Everyone says that LSU ran up the score, but if you go back and watch the game, LSU did not throw a pass half the 3rd and the entire 4th quarter.
But it was quite funny seeing Miles say that to Cam after the play.

Mike Leach did not run up the score in the Cotton Bowl when 'BAMA's defense pretty much stiffled his high powered offense. No matter the system, if the oppossing team has a quality defense, Coach Leach will not get his points. His offense is only good when the defense does not have speed and knows how to hit. Texas and 'Bama proved that last season.

There is not a player or coach in NCAA Football that anyone can hate more than the system itself..The BCS since it's beginning has robbed deserving teams a chance to win a national championship. Get rid of the BCS and bring on playoffs. I'm saying this even after my favorite school had 2 National Championship games under this system.

Craig James- hates the west coast, thought Oklahoma would whip USC in the 2005 Orange Bowl.
Beano Cook- You would think that the East Coast is the only place that plays football.
The Texas Fan at the Rose Bowl game, whom mocked and swore at a seven year old boy ( SC Fan), brought the kid to tears, could not win with class. The Texas fan received a right to the chin from the guy sitting next to me after the game, knocked him down. Cops actually arrested Texas fan. (Cops were homers, I guess)
Most of the SEC whom schedule teams like the Citadel, Louisiana Monroe, outside of the SEC, Can't fault Tennessee here, they open with Cal and have played ND, UCLA on the road etc...
Brett Musberger- Time to retire Brent..... God he is awful.
Mack Brown- just because- well he is good friends with President Dumbo. Maybe Texas will schedule Dubai State U @ Austin, instead of New Mexico State.

You PAC - 10 guys kill me with your SEC schedule bashing. Like you guys don't schedule the WAC, Mountain West, and Big Sky teams? The only PAC - 10 team that consistently schedules tough nonconference games is USC, and even that is dependent upon how good Notre Dame decides to be in any given year.
And funny how you guys only give credit to Tennessee but not LSU, who has beaten PAC - 10 teams 3 years in a row, including stomping Arizona in 2003 when PAC - 10 fans claimed that LSU hadn't played anybody out of conference. Also, LSU would have played - and beaten - Virginia Tech that year had Virginia Tech not dropped them. Virginia Tech scheduled a home - and - home against LSU, beat LSU in Blacksburg, and then reneged on the return trip.
Florida? They play FSU every year.
Georgia plays Georgia Tech every year and has a series coming up with Arizona.
Auburn? They play Georgia Tech from time to time, and had a home and home with USC.
Arkansas? They have a home and home with USC, and were the last team to beat Texas and Vince Young in Austin.
So please people, quit it with the distortions and the nonsense. There is no evidence that the SEC plays nonconference schedules that are any weaker than anyone else. It is as pathetic as USC trying to claim that Hawaii, BYU, and 6 - 6 Notre Dame were such great teams in 2003 and 2004, or Fresno was such a great team this year.

Chris (#14):
As far as the woodshed goes, I am from the South and that is a fairly common expression. I will forgive your ignorance. However, I must say that your point of "Mike Leach plays the same way the entire game regardless of the score" is just an attempt to cover up what the rest of the nation knows: an inferiority complex of being in the Big 12 South. You simply can't schedule 2-3 Division II cupcakes a year and ever expect to be taken seriously.
Also, the point of "every team knows he plays this way so they don't have to sign up to play us if they don't want to." is really juvenile in and of itself. Please don't act like you don't understand how the schedules are virtually out of everyone's hands (fans/players) and try to compensate for a weak argument with a weaker defense.
In 2002, Texas Tech was up at halftime over Clemson 30-2. When asked how he thought the game was going, Mike Leach said he was mad that his offense had not been more efficient. a------s like this really deserve a beating on behalf of all the kids that walked on at a DII school for fun and came away with a 77-3 loss.
I hope I never meet him....

Tommie Trojan,
Your tirade against Bill Callahan is ridiculously premature. I have lived in Lincoln my entire life. Every member of my family has graduated from UNL and we have held season tickets for generations. The game of college football has changed and ever increasing speed on defense has mandated that Nebraska's offensive scheme evolve in order to remain on top of the sport. Yes Callahan's first year trying to install the new system with the old personnel was painful, how could it not be? His second season the Huskers improved and gelled in a huge way and finished very strong with wins against Colorado and Michigan and a top 5 and a top 20 recruiting class in his first two years.
It sounds to me like you know very little about the Huskers. Your statements are presumptuous and unwarranted. Give the Huskers a chance. Rome wasn't rebuilt in a day. But make no mistake the University of Nebraska will be back sooner than you naysayers think. Callahan has earned the respect of the players, the staff, the fans and the state. If you truly have spent any time in Lincoln you would know that that is no easy task considering all that has happened here. Trying to classify Callahan as one of the "most hated" is just plain stupid and does not reflect the opinions of Husker Nation.

The last 3 bowl games tell the whole story. The team is awful on defense. I agree with my main man (SEC) that the big ten, sec are pathetic against PAC 10 powerhouses. Regan (#44), first of all, Texas Tech is playing UTEP and TCU on the road this year. They do not play 2-3 Div II teams every year; last season there was a faux pas of sorts where the teams that Tech had scheduled backed-out or something so Tech scheduled those Div II schools. Plus a Div I team only receives credit for 2 games when playing 3 Div II teams, Leach just did that to get an extra home game. Prior to that, Tech had the following non-conference games (with alternating home games): New Mexico, TCU, SMU, Ole Miss, NC State. Get your facts straight before commenting next time.

reddragon (#46):
Point taken, reddragon, I apologize for leaping to conclusions. I do believe, however, that regardless of the specifics, it could be stated that Texas Tech isn't well known for playing tremendous non-conference schedules. (Though in fairness, NC State and Mississippi were pretty good when those games were played.)
This isn't that big of an issue at all, since everyone does nowadays.
My issue was that Texas Tech plays the small teams and sends the kids home with 60-point losses. Maybe I've seen "Rudy" and "Hoosiers" too many times, but running up the score to the extent that Mike Leach has done is worthy of a trip to the nearest parking lot.
Here's a list of Texas Tech's recent wins where they scored over 50 points:
2005:
Florida Int'l (5-6): 56-3
Sam Houston State (non-IA): 80-3
Indiana State (non-IA): 63-7
Kansas State (5-6): 59-20
Texas A&M: 56-172004:
TCU (5-6): 70-35
Nebraska (5-6): 70-102003:
SMU (0-12): 58-10
Texas A&M (4-8) 59-28
Iowa State (2-10): 52-21
Baylor (3-9): 62-142002:
Missouri (5-7): 52-38
Baylor (3-9): 62-11
Clemson (7-6): 55-15The win against Clemson was the last time Texas Tech scored over 50 points against a team with a winning record. During that game, Leach simply claimed he was 'running his style of offense'. Running up the score has nothing to do with the 'style of offense' - running the football to wind down the clock is not a complicated concept.
IMHO, running up the score is classless to begin with. Putting 80 points on Sam Houston State? You've gotta be kidding me - someone's gotta be trying to compensate for something...

You can't spell either Michigan Man... It's okay after that ass whipping we did you the last five years, I forgive your ignorance. Maybe if John Navarre got on Game Day you wouldn't complain? Game is in Columbus this year, Tressel isn't Leach so we won't hang 80 on you, maybe just 50.

He's hated because he has been so successful. He's hated by fans of schools who want a Bobby Bowden, or think they already have one. Basically, because he is the winningest coach in DI history.
P.S. I'll bet some people will respond with the same "it's cause he's a *good 'ol boy,*" nonsense, but let's face it: team fans will always look for reasons to trash their rivals (or whoever's on top). It's part of what college football has become, sadly. (admitedly, I am guilty of it myself)

Decagator,
His name is Chief Osceola and the horse's name is Renegade.
I've never heard of the "Nole Marching Band," but I have heard of the Marching Chiefs, the organization of which I am a member, the band Sports Illustrated dubbed "The Band that never lost a hald-time show." I don't know why you would hate us, especially second to cane fans. Quite frankly, I'm flattered. But if you'd like to see us perform, I invite you to any of our Home games next year, we have eight of them. You might find out why we are called the "World Renown" Marching Chiefs.

My votes (as if you care)
Coach: Bobby Bowden... the antithesis of what a COLLEGE football coach should be. (i.e. "The Anti-Joe Pa")
Broadcaster: Trev Alberts... always pimping for the major programs, and prone to ridiculous facial contortions when expressing disagreement with his colleagues.

If we are talking about fans that are most hated and the most disrespectful the trophy would have to go to Colorado. They like to spit at you, key up any vehicle that has out of state plates and throw things at players on the field. Maybe that's so they can give there team an advantage to win a game. Way to go jackasses you should get rid or the buff and get a jackass instead!!!!

Tom Cat #81,
USC plays home games in the Coliseum, UCLA plays in the Rose Bowl dufus. If you're referring to this years Rose Bowl, it was pretty evenly split between UT and USC fans.
Also, that EX Pac 10 Quarterback that you despise is only an NFL Hall of Famer and more importantly a Fighting Duck legend. Trashing Keith Jackson is beyond lame.
I will say that I disagree with So Cal Clippers, I love Texas, especially Austin (Berkeley East). I travel extensively to Dallas (not many Texans here, mostly corporate transplants), Houston, San Antonio as well, nothing but great people. Can't say the same for LA.

Texas Tech players that played in that game... fishy, very fishy ( i seen 0 TTU players get up alone.. always had help, and never bent thier knees... now i'm not saying they did something to get an edge... but very fishy (that was the first lose by the way)) I HATE TTU... SoCal, I cannot believe you'd forget Alabama's 1978 title as a "joke" title- USC beat BAMA in Birmingham during the regular season, and BAMA "split" the title with USC.
Another "joke" title was BAMA's 1941- they were shut out twice in conference play that year. BAMA claims it as one of their "12," though.

So Cal Clips:
Perhaps Alabama's 73 title was a "makeup call"? And you would have to add BYU in 1984 as a joke title; they didn't beat a single ranked team and barely got by 6 - 6 Michigan in the Holiday Bowl.
And please, cool it with how USC plays in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and not the Rose Bowl. I understand that Los Angeles is almost 500 square miles (see, Wikipedia can make even us SEC fans look smart!) but seriously now. Are you going to claim that USC did not have a decided advantage against Texas in that game, or that it really matters whether you guys play USC in the Coliseum or the Rose Bowl? Going across town does not make it a "road game" or even a "neutral site" in terms of its physical and emotional effects on the players. When you guys beat Michigan for the national title in 2003, where playing in L.A. was a big deal for Michigan (the plane ride, the hotel rooms, the beach, the California sun), the Southern Cal players felt right at home in a familiar environment, and I would guarantee that the vast majority of the tickets went to USC - loving locals.
Whenever USC plays in L.A., it is a home game. Period. So, the fact that you guys have UCLA in your division means one less road game a year.

So Cal-
How could you forget BAMA's 1978 title? Aren't you a USC fan? Also, BAMA's 1941 title was a joke- what entity awards NC's for being shut out, twice, in conference games? Anser: The Football Thesaurus
In BAMA's defense they did get screwed out a title in 1966- when ND played Michigan State to a tie to win the NC. BAMA went undefeated, including a blowout over Nebraska in the Sugar Bowl. Notre Dame didn't play a bowl game- they were too cool for that back then.

BYU's 1984 Title - see there's serious room for debate with the Titles that were awarded in the years that Championship Selection Organizations (the Polls, the Ratings systems, etc) didNT account for EVERY game, meaning the years when they excluded the Bowl results.
-- The Coaches Poll changed, not til 1974; the Very Next season after the 1973 Alabama farce-of-a-Title debacal. There was no more "pretending" that Bowl games were merely "exibition games" like they "actually" were in the early 1900's. There were coaches/fans/media pretending since the Michigan 1947 AP Poll Re-count AFTER the Rose Bowl... 1947, there was precedence set way back then.1984, both Polls counted the Bowl results, and an Undefeated BYU won both Titles. Questioning BYU's Title would lead you to the No. 2 team that year... Washington (which won the Helms Title), who might have had a better arguement if they didnt have a LOSS.

speaking of "pretending"... Tomcat never made a reference to the Texas-USC 2005/06 Rose Bowl. Either he didnt make it clear or the guy made a mistake, lets not pretend; refered to the Rose Bowl as USC's "home feild".Gerald, I corrected the guy and moved on, I didnt press it. And I wasnt the only one that made the correction. Dont try to make it seem like I dont or wouldnt recognize that USC playing in Los Angeles would be an "advantage". Now I'll be clear, USC facing Texas in the Rose Bowl (or Michigan, or Miami, or etc) is an "advantage" for USC.
But Gerald, I explicitly asked Tomcat if he was being "facetious" about his other post with the lists -- if anything, Gerald, you shoulda picked up on that (if you were gonna jump in with assumptions)So Cal Clippers said:

Although I am a buckeye fan, I will side with you on your point about the diversity in Texas. I have been there several times and as far as rednecks go, Ohio may have just as many! Anywayz, everyone knows the reason that the buckeyes lost the big one to Texas is due to the starter at the time JZ or (Justin Zwick). Anyone with a brain who watched that game knows that had we stuck with our TRUE starter (Troy Smith) we definitely would have tapped that ass. Bottom line coaching and the wrong qb cost us that game in September. Bet it wont be the same this year though. Buckeyes by 2-3 touchdons easily!!!!!Tomcat said:

And if you have heard of him I am sure you do not like to recall him!
Maybe bo could keep his team playing in the fourth quarter,as you will recall last year mich led "THE OHIO ST.U" in the fourth with 6:45 to play 21-12,so you see it was a late Ohio st. comeback to win,so watch out, this year the Buckeyes might not be able to put together another comeback!
