Collegio Football 2007

A few weeks ago I got an email inviting me to try out this piece of software called "Collegio Football" which claimed to have all sorts of stats and schedules and such. I figured, heck, why not give it a look? But I wasn't convinced that it would be able to pry my hands off of the ESPN College Football Encyclopedia.

Boy was I wrong. This is a really neat piece of software and the guys at Sophos Software have made an offer that Fanblogs readers can get $10 of the regular price by using a special coupon code.

Here's what Jason from Sophos Software had to say:
Collegio Football is the Electronic Media guide to NCAA College Football, covering the sport we know and love from 1869 to 2016 and EVERYTHING in between, complete with FREE weekly updates throughout the season!

Past - Historic game results and records all the way back to 1869! Over 6,000 historic box scores!

Present - Free weekly datafile updates throughout the season, providing mounds of sortable and exportable stats, standings, schedules, side-by-side team comparisons, etc., plus easy access to literally thousands of college football Internet hyperlinks for online story research. Enjoy this season all the more with Collegio Football 2007 as your Interactive Guide!
This is some seriously powerful software... it allows exporting to excel (and various other programs), it provides national rankings for statistical categories, TV coverage and betting info, historical records (Want to know how Middle Tennessee State University has fared against the spread over the last five years?), and countless other stats.

I'd love to see the new Data files come out a little more quickly. Currently the stats are put out on Thursday and you have to go to a website to download and install them. It'd be great if the software pulled them down automatically.

To be honest, there are still things I'm discovering about the software. It's very expansive. For example, in the course of writing this post I noticed that you can look at NFL Drafts back to 1936. At any rate, go check it out and, if you like it go ahead and have a copy at $10 thanks to our friends at Sophos.

This is some great software. I have used it for about 7 or 8 years now. I actually use the stats on my TideFans.com site and our members love the details. Chris Fowler wrote in his blog last week that he uses it as well to prepare for the ESPN GameDay broadcasts. I have no stake in the program but am a very satisfied and longtime user.

It's not perfect, as noted, the data file not being available a day or two earlier would be my only criticism worth mentioning. However, that's hardly enough to be swayed away. If there's anything remotely close to Collegio as a college football reference resource, I'd like to know what it is. I'm in my 2nd year, and I'm still finding bits of information, uses, etc. I'm surprised it doesn't cost more...

    Tom Blogical,
I know this is not the subject area, so I apologize in advance. I didn't know where else to post this. As you know, C-Dogg is a big Miami Hurricane fan, so therefore I'm neutral in what I am about to say. Do you think that Desmond Howard was wrong for ripping Michigan State on National TV/(ESPN) for loosing that Notre Dame game? If so, should Michigan State fans call for some action to be taken by ESPN? Isn't Desmond suppose to be neutral as an employee of ESPN? Yes he went to Michigan and its obvious. He could be hurting M.State's recruiting. Desmond Howard is NOT professional, and it shows. Desmond needs to learn from Kirk Herbstreit who doesn't rip Michigan (on TV that is) when they loose to Ohio State.

    C-DOGG:

First, I just want to say that I did download this software just now, but stupid me, I didn't see this post in time to take advantage of the offer. (Maybe they'll cut me some slack? Eh, I doubt it.) I'm going to give it a try this week to see what I think of it.

Second, with apologies to Pete for going off-topic, I saw Desmond Howard last night and at the time, I didn't really think anything of the potential bias issue, basically because I *agreed* with him. Michigan State completely blew that game, they were either a top-five team or a bottom-five team the way they played. They are truly schizophrenic. That being said, I would have to watch his remarks again to see how harsh he was. He's definitely not as polished as the rest of the guys. Maybe there are a lot of MSU fans who would agree with you. I can tell you, now that I have to make sure I'm neutral here on Fanblogs, it's something I have to be very conscious of, so maybe he forgot himself for a moment.
