Texas OC to be next SMU coach?

Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman has a juicy post relating that University of Texas OC Greg Davis has been contacted by SMU regarding their vacant head coaching position.

A source close to the Longhorn coaching staff said Davis has been contacted by SMU unofficially. Texas Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds said no one from SMU has contacted him to ask for permission to talk to Davis and added that he would not comment in the future about speculation on the Longhorn coaching staff.

Davis declined any substantial comment Tuesday afternoon, saying through a spokesman, "I have always found it's best not to comment publicly on speculation regarding job opportunities. We're concentrating on Friday's game with Texas A&M."

Davis has been with Longhorns coach Mack Brown since his North Carolina days and reportedly turned down an opportunity at Minnesota last year.

Brian at Bevo Sports digs deeper....

A surprising amount of coaching rumors today. Before the Davis to SMU rumor this afternoon there was some buzz on the Arkansas message boards that Davis was headed for retirement and former Arky offensive coordinator Guz Malzahn would be Texas’ next OC. When that rumor was brought up on Orangebloods.com, posters claiming to be “in the know” wouldn’t comment on particular coaches coming or going just that there was some smoke that one of the Texas coaches may be headed for retirement.

Davis has gotten his fair share of criticism (and rightfully so) as of late. While he has overseen the development of Vince Young and Colt McCoy, he has also directed a Texas offense that struggled to get out of it's own way at times this year.

I'm not sure how Malzahn's name got roped into this, but I would think Texas would want someone with a little more experience. Malzahn's gotten a lot of buzz, but he's only a few seasons removed from the high school sidelines and the expectations at UT are much, much, much higher.

Bohls suggests that SMU is going to want a more experienced head coach, but I submit that -- with more than a decade watching Mack Brown -- Davis might be a great candidate at SMU, especially if he is under some pressure in Austin.

Take him! Greg Davis is a lackluster OC at best. He got lucky with Vince Young, but his playcalling 90% of the time is so predictable and unimaginative. When your at the game and you see him call the same 3 or 4 plays about 20 times during the game you start thinking when the hell is he gonna shake things up?

I know he was a lackluster head coach at Tulane years ago, and he would most likely be the same at SMU. He won't go though he know's he's got it good at Texas, and you think he is gonna go somewhere where he has to handle all the criticism of being a head coach? Yeah right.

#1 Ya you're right, wish this rumor was true.
Unfortunatly Brown & Davis are kinda joined at the hip.He does a great job with the QB's & receivers, but sometimes he is way to conservative and predicatble with the playcalling.

Greg Davis won't leave for SMU if he didn't take the Minnesota job.

I think Davis is a class act, but if he chooses to retire or go for a head coaching job, there is an OC in Tuscasloosa that could do the job quite well.

It's funny how the fans get down on the offensive coordinator when the son of a pro football quarterback can't tell the difference between a safety and a wide receiver. Tailbacks that can't hang on to the ball don't help the OC either.

#4 I would kinda have to agree with you,Hes got it made and the Gopher job would be better than the Pony Job.Yes his obvious replacement would be one of the most productive QB's the Horns have ever had, who as you recall was benched in favor of that left handed QB from NJ that you refer to.

#4 You obviously don't follow Greg Davis, because if you did you would know how incredibly boring and predictable his playcalling is, so until you actually follow an Offensive Coordinator for 9 years, then you don't know what your talking about.

Second yeah Chris Simms was a bust at QB. Guess who's brilliant idea it was having both Chris and Major share time, and eventually benching Major for Chris? Greg Davis. Everyone thinks it was Mack, but Davis was the mad scientist behind it all, i remember. Benching a texas legend for an idiot with a well known father. The result: Never beating OU with Simms, one appearance in the Big 12 championship (upset by Colorado with a chance at a national title) and a string mediocre bowls instead of BCS bowls.

So before you defend an OC because he had great success with one of the best players in college football history, but passed on Todd Ressing and Chase Daniel (Kansas and Mizzou) get your facts straight. Hook Em Horns

@6 40 Acres - I've followed Greg Davis and Mack Brown since the day they set foot on the 40 acres.
I've always assumed that Mack Brown had final say over use of players, but I'll defer to you since you imply that you have the inside track with Greg Davis and Mack Brown on the handling of Chris Sims.

BTW, How many teams have won more games than Texas, since MB and GD arrived in Austin?

@5 Tomcat - The frustrating part of the Sims saga is that Mack redshirted VY in Sims' senior year. Too much talent and not enough snaps.br>
    Going to the game tomorrow?

@ #7 Since Mack and Greg arrived Texas has won 9 games every year and 10 games the last 6 years in a row make it 7 after we leave Kyle Field tomorrow. More 9 and 10 win seasons than any other team in the nation during that time. Only Michigan 868 wins, and Notre Dame 823 wins have won more games than Texas 819.

@#13 good too see a service member home with his family. I was in the military for 4 years during Iraqi Freedom and I'm currently in the active reserves so i know how much that sucks being over seas for the holidays. God Bless our Troops.
