Suspended RB Boyd will finish career as Gamecock

Suspended South Carolina football player Cory Boyd will finish his career as a Gamecock, so sayeth his mother. Boyd, who would have been USC's top returning rusher, has been working out in his hometown with Duce Staley.

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier has refused to comment on Boyd's suspension, saying only that it was not related to academics and that he won't announce anything on Boyd's status until after August 1st.

It had been rumored that Boyd, a junior, would leave USC and transfer, perhaps to Rutgers. His mother is denying that Boyd will play anywhere other than USC, even if he is suspended by Spurrier for the entire 2005 season.

"Cory will be back at the University of South Carolina," said Merriweather. "I’m assuring you he’s coming back."

There have been some questions since the first reports after his suspension about whether he was really working out with Staley or not.
