Gamecocks add Wofford for '06
The South Carolina Gamecocks have added the Wofford Terriers to their 2006 schedule. South Carolina's game with Mississippi State may also move from September 23 to Thursday August 31.
The date of the Wofford game has not been finalized yet but it replaces a game previously scheduled with Central Florida for September 16. The Terriers also replaced Bowling Green on the 2001 schedule after a game on 9/15/2001 with Bowling Green was cancelled following terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The 2006 game would be a one-year deal with terms of the game undisclosed but expected to be between $225,000-$375,000 for Wofford.
The USC Trojans and Arkansas Razorbacks were previously said to be in negotations to move their game in Arkansas to August 31. It would appear that the initial proposal fell through and SC-MSU would be second choice.

The UCF thing sounded more like they dropped the game than SC dropping it because they weren't C-USA when it was scheduled.
Both teams played last year for Spurrier's first win at SC (it turned out to be a close one.) I'm sure conspiracy theorists could see it otherwise but it doesn't appear to me that SC backed out.

I'm with ya', ND444. These guys just go from bad to worse. These teams in the SEC just don't get it. They lose everybody's respect when they schedule teams like this. I don't care if they go 11-0, I'll always have to remember that they played, Wofford? What is that? I'm really agast. I can't even beleive this.

Yall guys that like to diss the SEC need to quit emotionally reacting to everything you hear. If other teams back out, there are only small programs available to play. You need to look into things before putting your dumb thoughts out there. You couldn't be much more than a trash collector. See how I just emotionally reacted to your comments. It is wrong since I don't know anything about yall. And what is this 'teams in the SEC'? South Carolina and Wofford, Auburn and Citadel. What else? Auburn and USC, Arkansas and USC, Tennessee and Notre Dame, Georgia and Boise State, Alabama and Oklahoma. Please tell me. I can't believe this.

Just a little background and explanation for you all. UCF backed out of the game next year with South Carolina. South Carolina didn't drop UCF from the schedule. UCF also didn't back out of noxt seaons's game until a little over a month ago. Since most schools have already solidified their schedules for 2006, South Carolina's options for an opponent on short notice were pretty slim. That's why South Carolina didn't have much choice. It was either schedule a 1-AA school like Wofford, or possibly skip the game altogether (not a viable option). Why Wofford, as opposed to another 1-AA school? Well, Wofford is in South Carolina, and keeping the payout money in the state is probably a factor (albeit a small one).
Just my two cents.

If you guys were smart you would have done a little bit more research before posting your dumb comments. UCF pulled out of the South Carolina game. South Carolina had no one willing to take the spot in the schedule but Wofford. South Carolina needed a new opponent on very short notice.
Get the story straight before posting dumb comments please. Thanks.usc_slim said:

i have no idea why these fans of other confrences have the nerve to talk crap about usc and tne SEC when the Sec has the best teams in college football. Look at the stats the last 20 years at the top defenses and offenses and tell me how many sec has. The sec has every conference out numbered at least by two. we don't have to make excuses when people are afraid to play us.

I completely understand and accept South Carolina's situation. If a team backed out on them, they had to scramble to get another. We've seen it before (namely Auburn and Citadel) and this is jsut another case of that. And YES, the SEC has tough Out of Conference schedules. I know for a fact that Tennessee future Out of Conference opponents include UCLA, Oklahoma, Califonia, and Oregon. And Tennessee is playing them all at home and away.

By the way people if you haven't noticed, or don't know let me let you know that the teams which South Carolina is adding to the schedule are all schools from South Carolina. It's called class, you give other schools in your area a chance to play you. Hell Roy Williams finally is realizing the great Dean Smith was wrong by not playing local schools outside of the ACC. It increases your fan base, and helps keep money in your state. So in conclusion you non-geography monkeys. The Citadel, Wofford, SC State, and Furman are all South Carolina Colleges and Universities. By the Way Furman has won a Division I -AA Championship, and was in the playoffs of the Division I-AA last year, in football, and plays in the Southern Conference home of this years past Division I-AA National Champions Applachian State University. Besides I didn't see the Trojans trying to get Florida, LSU, Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina, Alambama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Ole Miss or Vanderbilt on their schedule.

If you were from South Carolina you might realize that Wofford College is located in SC..and can potentially benefit the Gamecocks financially by playing a school like this. Most likely, they will win, but just two days ago, the baseball team lost to Wofford. So maybe it's not a matter of respect. Stop being such elitist.
