Senator questions Gamecocks' mascot

In a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing yesterday, S.C. State Senator Darrell Jackson brought up the mascot and logo of South Carolina's athletic teams during a discussion on strengthening the state's laws against illegal cockfighting. Jackson said the school needed to reconsider its mascot if pending legislation becomes law and asked "how can we as lawmakers and other leaders of this state justify a major institution in our state running ads and logos on billboards with a fighting gamecock with spurs on the feet?"

Jackson pointed out that he didn't want the Gamecock dropped as the school's mascot totally but wants the spurs removed from the chicken's feet on the logo. Some giving levels in the Gamecock Club are Spur levels and the mascot prior to Cocky was Big Spur.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has called on the school to drop the mascot completely in the past and then changed their position to the same one Jackson took yesterday (removal of the spurs.) A school spokesman say, ""We don't glorify the cockfighting aspect."

He just hurt alot of votes for showing that he can't find anything more important out there to fix, and I'm sure there are many other things for him to consider than a mascot. Unless someone from South Carolina can confirm that illegal cock fighting is seriously an issue out there, I think politics is stooping to a new low.

It's a good thing the state of South Carolina has a perfect education system, perfect highway system, and is a flawless utopia of civilization so the judicial subcommittee has enough time on their hands to address the horrible atrocities of chicken-on-chicken violence.

I'm looking forward to the Gamecock issue being resolved so the State Senate can de-claw the Tigers and then move on to legally resolving the "great taste-less filling" debacle...

(this is sarcasm, just in case anyone missed it..)

The fact is: that a "real" Gamecock does have spurs. What's next? Removing the "racks" off of all animals with some kinda horns cause they might use them to fight? I say we just remove the testacles of every male child born and that pretty much should handle it. God forbid there might ever be any aggression shown by any of God's creatures. Do any of these "fruitloops" understand that the animals were made that way for a purpose - be it evolution or creation? Either way it's all the same. The Gamecock grew spurs to defend itself just a the "Longhorn" grew horns to defend itself. Why don't they just require all animals to wear a "Trojan" and then we wouldn't have any to worry about sending the wrong message to our young impressionable minds. For cryin' out loud - what has gone wrong in America? Is this crap really for real or what? And, these are supposed to be "learned" people. God help us if these "nitwits" do not start to get a clearer meaning of what life really is.

Is this really what we pay politicians for ???? Then fine just change the mascot name to just "cocks". There are plenty of jokes for all.

This is interesting - there always seems to be some kind of a revolt on team names or mascots.

It's starting to get hard to name a team period - there are so many across all sports leagues.

Notre Dame Fan 444 and Regan you guys hit the nail on the head, this is where we are going, we can't figure out how to improve our schools, we can figure out the war on terror, we can't stop innercity violence, we can stop hate crimes, but WOW we are going to worry about a college mascot and the image it portrays involving the "cock fighting" industry....Frigging COCK FIGHTHING you have got to be kidding me...how do these senators and congressman get elected ???? I am glad to see that the great folks in the State of SC have such a wonderful person in office, someone that is really on top of the issues at hand...GIVE ME A BREAK

you have got to be kidding me, I dont understand why people cant just leave mascots be. This is the most absurd thing I have ever seen. If this keeps up people are going to start being offended by team colors.

Gas prices and debt are soaring. We are fighting a meaningless war. Jobs are going oversea. Now The Senator is questioning a SC Mascot. GET A LIFE!!!

Only thing I can figure is that this is another way to get attention. I don't raise or fight gamecocks, I don't approve of it, but...leave Cocky alone! While I know that as a grad and fan I might be a bit prejudicial towards this particular mascot, I truly believe that he is the cutest one of all schools, kids adore him and he helps make USC shine. The gamecock logo is gorgeous, the bird is beautiful in his aggressive fighting stance and USC loves him.

This senator who has jumped on PETA's bandwagon...where did he go to college...hmmmm.

I hope you did not vote for this guy if you are still in SC. What a monumental waste of time. I hope some of the citizens of SC have raised a stink over it.

I am all for PETA - People Eating Tasty Animals (well that is the version I subscribe to).
