The Citadel searches for a head coach

The Citadel has been searching for a new head coach since February 11 when John Zernhelt announced his resignation to become an assistant coach for the New York Jets.

Citadel Athletic Director Les Robinson has told reporters that Mike O'Cain, who was fired after the season as the Clemson offensive coordinator, could not be ruled out as a candidate despite the fact that Robinson fired O'Cain as N.C. State head coach.

Other names mentioned as potential candidates for the Citadel vacancy include: Kenny Carter from Vanderbilt, Keith Jones from Navy and David Sollazzo at Maryland. Tim Horton and Chuck Petersen at Air Force are both mentioned as well but say they have had no contact with the Citadel. The name of Al Seagraves, who was fired by Elon in 2003, has also been mentioned.

Robinson says he has no deadline for hiring a new coach. He has reportedly interviewed current Citadel assistants and states that he's involved in "fact-finding" now that could take three weeks or more. Spring practice for the Bulldogs starts March 1.
