9/3 SoCon Preview
2 teams in the SoCon kicked off the season Thursday night. Those games are summarized at the end of this preview.
Georgia Southern travels to Northeastern (Atlantic 10) today for a game that kicks off at 2 p.m. EDT in Boston. The game will air live on CN8 in Boston and via tape delay on CSS starting at 3:30.
Wofford hosts Georgetown (Kentucky) of the NAIA today in Spartanburg. That game kicks off at 7 p.m.
Chattanooga opens the season tonight at home against Tennessee Tech at 6 p.m.
Elon hosts Coastal Carolina (Big South) tonight at 6 in Elon.
Appalachian travels to Richmond, Kentucky to take on the Eastern Kentucky Colonels today at 6:30 p.m.
The Citadel starts out the Kevin Higgins era hosting cross-town rival Charleston Southern of the Big South today. That game between the Bulldogs and the Buccaneers will air live on S.C. ETV. The Bulldogs are 2-0 in the nascent series. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Johnson Hagood Stadium.
In Thursday night action, Furman won 37-35 at Jacksonville State. Ingle Martin completed a 9-yard pass to Justin Stepp on the last play of the games to seal the win for the Paladins after a 74-yard drive in the final 1:22. The Gamecocks and Paladins combined for over 800 yards of total offense in the contest. Martin was 17 of 28 for 200 yards and two touchdowns. The Paladins had 3 backs run for 65 yards or better as they rushed for 302 yards. Jacksonville's Maurice Mullins was 7 of 14 while passing for 96 yards. He threw one interception and one touchdown. The Gamecocks were led in rushing by Clay Green, who racked up 111 yards on the ground.
Also on Thursday night, Western Carolina defeated Mars Hill 21-7. Catamounts QB Justin Clark completed two touchdown passes in the 4th Quarter after the game was tied 7-7 early in the final period. Mars Hill got its only touchdown in the 2nd Quarter. The Lions, a D-II school, have now lost their last 11 against WCU.
