Stanford players took recruits to strip club

A Stanford investigation has revealed that the Stanford football team used athletic-department money to entertain prospective recruits at a strip club in 2003.

According to the university, the coaches weren't aware of the trips and no NCAA rules were violated.

The school issued a statement Tuesday stating it "regrets the actions of the student athletes who accompanied recruits in 2003 to adult entertainment venues." Even though NCAA rules were not violated, the statement said the school's "standards of conduct preclude such entertainment as any part of recruitment activity."

Per NCAA rules, each host player receives $30 per day to entertain a recruit.

The players submitted hand-written receipts for $20 to the football department. Lost-receipt memos were then filed to replace the handwritten receipts to account for the payouts.

The Chronicle has done further investigation and learned that the "trips to the New Century involved at least 10 player hosts and their recruits, with more than $300 spent at the club".

A Stanford fan site relates that Stanford hosted 28 players on the weekends of Jan. 10-11 and 17-18. 20 of those 28 went on to sign with Stanford.

20 of 28 signed after a $20 visit to the New Century "Theater?"

Wow you can't get much for $20 there but maybe they get a Student Discount? The place isn't allowed to serve alcohol so it seems like a pretty good investment to me.

I can't even imagine trying to turn in a receipt for reimbursement from a place like the New Century at my job. I'd be laughed out of the building and be looking for a new employer.

At least they didn't try to submit phony $20 receipts from legitimate establishments..now that would be wrong...right?

Are we supposed to be surprised? This happens at most BIG programs, Colorado anyone?

They all take kids out, its a competition...why would you want to go see a school that didnt show you a 'good' time? OK it may not be moral in all ways but these are 18-22 year old kids we're talking about. At that age who is interested in meeting girls and partying? If I was a prospect I would expect the treatment, and be upset if I didnt have a little party in my honor.

    Duckman,

If going to a strip club doesn't make you a man, are you implying it makes you a woman?

    Bear Fan,

I think the Stanford players were introducing their young recruits to that CA cultural phenomenon of "South of Market Street Native Folk Dancing." Bears players would have probably done the same, but the $3 toll on the Bay Bridge to SF only leaves $17 stipend for each recruit, ruling out the individual lap dance

As a graduate of mathematics from the U of O, I can tell you, the Math Club girls can't be bought for $20 - $30. I'd still be in college if that were the case.

Unlike my fellow Duck, Duckman, going to a strip club may not make me a "man" but it does make me feel something...?

I believe the "men will be men" comment posted by Erika, was in essense saying that that's just something guys do, with no disrespect.

I'm gonna have to weigh in with Erica on this one. Yep, I beleive that most men are repulsed by the thought of naked women running around. The strange thing is: we just can't seem to tame that demon. So, against the advise of my psychotherapist, I married a stripper. I thought that it would help me to relax my inbred fear (and morbid curiousity) of the female's nudity. Well, needless to say four children later, my paranoia of a naked female has reached it's zenix. Funny thing is: she still has a knack for shaking every single dollar out of my pocket. On Monday mornings, I'm lucky if I got a tank of gas and 50 cents to make a phone call. But the worst thing of all is whenever I gaze upon another woman, I still wonder if I offered her a dollar, if she would take her clothes off.
I don't think that anything that I have tried to do to get this monkey off my back has worked. My worst nightmare is that I'm gonna wake up in the "Twilight Zone" and the world is gonna be filled with naked women and that I am gonna be the only man in it. Can you imagine how many household appliances that I would have to try and fix? Or worse yet: would I have to listen to every single one of them tell me about their day as soon as I opened up the sports page? I can't imagine that a God would be so cruel.
