Stanford fires Harris; Chow next at Stanford?
Citing poor attendance at games and the team's 1-11 record this year, Stanford AD Bob Bowlsby announced that Cardinal Head Coach Walt Harris had been fired after two seasons with the team.
"This has been a tough year," Bowlsby said. "In some respects this decision was not made as a result of a 1-11 season as much as not seeing the progress in critical areas we would have liked to see the last two years."...
Bowlsby said the attendance was a factor in his decision, saying the football team plays a big role in raising revenue for other programs at the school.
"No question it was a factor," he said. "People vote with their pocket books and vote with their feet."
There has been an awful lot of talk for the better part of three months that Stanford would be a preferred place to coach for former USC OC and current Tennessee Titans OC Norm Chow. No word yet on a replacement for Harris, but count on Chow being in the mix.

I am a moron.
But, anybody who takes this job is even more moronic than I am. Harris was a real decent coach before coming to Stanford - now he's gone. Chow would never take this job. Look at all these rumors flyin' around all these jobs. These coaches all just lobby for more bread. I hope that no AD or GM goes for this okDEE-dok as nobody would want this job. What do they think at Stanford? That the mighty USC lost two league games - we can get back in it? Crazy. They should have just kept Harris. They can't do any better with Alabama, Miami and Arizona State all looking for coaches.

Academic schools do not do very well in the top conferences and they never will. Look at Stanford, Duke, Vandy, Northwestern, etc. Sorry folks, you can keep lying to yourself if you want to but stringent academics and nationally ranked football programs don't mix. You can be a good school and have a good football team, but if you cannot get athletes with 2.5 GPA's and slightly below average SAT/ACT scores admitted, you are going to struggle in a power conference.

Here is what the next coach at Stanford can do to get a better recruiting class than USC out there.
The dialogur from Stanford's recruiter is as follows....."Hey kid, I know that USC has a powerhouse program, UCLA is making a come up, and all three Florida schools want you. Here is what i know. I have 26 students who are about to quit school here at Stanford because their class hours are interfering with their startup internet business. They are big football fans here. They said that they will give you a summer job and a million shares of stock in their companies if you sign with Stanford. And yes we can get that in writing for you son."
Dad says to recruiter...."what is the name of these companies"
recruiter....."Google Jr. and Youtube Jr....your son can have stock in both"
Blue chip athlete says...."wow mom, dad, what do you think?"
Mom...."where's a damn ink pen when I need one!"

If the Berkeley City Council and nut job tree sitters get their way, Tedford won't get his new stadium, parking garage or facilities...perhaps he'd be willing to commute to Palo Alto? Brand new nice Stadium, only half full and lot's of parking!

Can you imagine sending your kid to Cal and then seeing her in the SF Chronicle chained to a tree, threatening to stay as long as it takes! I might admire her tenacity but I sure as hell would stop sending the checks.

THE Mayor:
I'd have to go on up to the attic, open up that ol' chest of long saved paper dolls that "my little girl" made as a child, and proceed to douse them in gasoline and lay a spark to em'. Then I'd go grab my axe, make it on outside, and proceed to start cuttin' up the nightly firewood. Then I'd sit down and start poundin' out endless pages of mindless meandering thoughts, while informing my daughter that I was gonna kill about a million trees with this keyboard, until she came down out of that tree and went and saved a spotted owl or something useful.

volstrike3 Boston College and Wake Forest are both very highly rated Academic schools. Rice is the highest rated academic school and made a bowl game this year (Against Troy and let me tell you that is the COMPLETE opposite). I think Stanford would have been happy with Rices season although I grant that it would be a more difficult achievement in the PAC-10 then eh, I think C-USA. The idea that there aren’t smart kids that can also play football is decidedly immature bias. On the same note, nothing stops these schools from dredging the ghettos of South Florida (except pride) and at least then they wouldn’t be staying local and gang banging with the old crowd. This is what the University of Miami does but it seems to end badly and maybe if these kids were miles away from the old “hood” they would be safe. I’m saying you can always recruit lower then the normal bar…. Oh and good coaching should lead to better seasons... Standford probably looked at Navy (a school that has that little commitment afterward to recruit against), or even Rice, or Wake and realized that even without recruits a well coached team should win some games...

Chow wants to be a head coach. He has made that clear for years ever since he was snubbed at BYU after Lavell Edwards Retired. I think he would take the Stanford job in a heart beat. I do not think NC State would have been good however since most of his connections are in the west. The fact that he just withdrew from consideration makes me wonder if something is in the works. I would look for him to be coach of ASU or Stanford next year.
