As Luck Has It, Harbaugh Is Out
The day after Heisman trophy runner-up QB Andrew Luck announced his decision to eschew the NFL draft for now and come back for another season, his coach, Jim Harbaugh, announced his departure with the NFL's San Francisco 49ers, signing a 5-year contract worth a reported $25 million.
Harbaugh's name had been floated for vacancies in both the college ranks and the pros. San Fran wanted him from the start and he was Michigan's #1 choice to succeed Rich Rod. The Miami Dolphins also had much interest and upon the news of his hiring with the 49ers, decided to keep their existing coach.
Luck, who was projected to be the #1 pick in 2011's draft, will stick around for his senior year and complete his degree and to stay with the teammates in his class, with whom he has a strong attachment . It is thought that he would've signed a contract worth a guaranteed $50 million. Those better be damn good friends, son. Also, three words for ya: disability insurance policy.
Actually, I see both sides of the issue. I applaud the kid for bucking the trend and not running for the money, deciding to fulfill a promise he made to himself and his family to get an education first and let the pros wait. On the flip side, I couldn't fault him if he did leave. That is a ton of cash to leave on the table--for now-- and there's no guarantees that it could still be there in one year with the pending NFL labor situation and other risks.
So Stanford fans, I guess one outta two ain't bad. I had you down for O and two.
