Saints Marrone to be introduced as Orange coach
Syracuse has found its man - Doug Marrone of the New Orleans Saints.
((crickets))
I know. I know, right? Who? Doug Marrone.
Marrone, the OC of the NFL's Saints, is a Syracuse guy, having played for the Orangemen Orange in the mid 1980s. He worked his way through the coaching ranks in the Northeast and can speak to the Syracuse traditions. Unlike some of the other candidates, Marrone truly wanted to be the head coach at Syracuse and is passionate about the Orange.
That said... Marrone has never been a head coach at any level. In fact, he's more like Greg Robinson than any of the other candidates Syracuse looked at - a career assistant with NFL credentials. He's been out of the college game for eight years and hasn't really worked in the Northeast since the mid 1990s. Despite all that was said about getting an experienced coach that could recruit at Syracuse, there's nothing to suggest that Marrone will be more successful than Robinson.
I guess we'll have to wait and see if Marrone can turn his passion and offensive system into something that can excite the Orange faithful and recruits. Until then, I'll give this hire a one on a scale of five - not good. Not good at all.
