TCU headed to Houston Bowl against Big XII

Another season of bowling for TCU football - the Horned Frogs are headed to the Houston Bowl. As Mountain West football champs, TCU has the option of playing in the Las Vegas Bowl or --since the conference will have more qualified teams than automatic bowl bids-- accepting an invitation to play as an at-large team elsewhere.

The Houston Bowl will be played on Dec. 31 at Reliant Stadium. The Frogs will face a Big XII opponent, likely Missouri, Nebraska or Iowa State.

    What a gipe.

TCU will finish 10 or 11 in BCS stnading only to play an unranked Big 12 team in Halliburton-Houston Crony Bowl.

i heard Tom Dely is gong toss the coin.

Wow, all TCU could muster up is the Houston Bowl? The Big 12 rep will not be close to being ranked, and they will probably only draw 35,000 if they're lucky. I would say the MWC needs to do a better job contracting out bowl games for their #1 and #2 teams.

I wouldn't be suprised if the Game Day Crew goes in a day early and makes the short drive up to College Station for the Lone Star Showdown on Friday morning.

The sad things is the Houston Bowl is a step UP from what the MWC had to offer its champion, the Las Vegas Bowl.

The MWC used to play the C-USA champion in the Liberty Bowl, until Utah blew them off last year when they made the BCS.

Liberty Bowl officials had their tender little feelings hurt and withdrew the contract with the MWC.

Playing in Houston also saves TCU money. TCU lost a ton on the Liberty Bowl trip for the game against Colorado St. in 2002. It's tough for a selective university of 8000 to travel very well, even though they discount tickets for students for away games (including the bowls). Students get into home games for free.

Honestly, the only better bowls for TCU would be the Cotton, the Fort Worth, or a BCS bid. Too bad neither TCU nor SMU can play in the Cotton Bowl due to contracts.

What is the stipulation that keeps TCU & SMU out of the Cotton?
Did that get any coverage up in the D-FW papers when it became known? When was that?

HeX -- Everyone knew about it. When UT, A&M, Tech, and Baylor left for the Big 12, the Cotton's contract did too. (Previously, the Cotton was a SWC champ vs. at-large game. That died with the advent of the Big 12.) Also, since 1999, the Cotton Bowl has been hosting a an SEC team in addition to a Big 12 representative. The reps from each conference are usually one of the top 3. In conferences of 12 teams, as long as these tie-ins exist, there will not be an at-large berth.
