Clemson at Temple could move to Charlotte

Speculation over the holiday weekend on Clemson boards indicated that the 2nd game of Clemson's 3-game series with Temple (currently scheduled for September 23, 2006) could be relocated from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia to Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Mickey Plyler of WCCP reported on the possibility Tuesday. Plyler indicated that a group in Charlotte wanted to buy the game from Temple to host it in the Queen City. There has been no word on whether this was the same group that was trying to get a game between the Tarheels and Gamecocks in Charlotte as well (South Carolina and North Carolina have signed a home-and-home.) Recent games in Charlotte have included ECU-N.C. State and Citadel-VMI in addition to the bowl game.

The Tigers defeated the Owls 37-7 in 2005 at Death Valley and there is also a return visit to Clemson for Temple in 2008.

I like the idea. Instead of playing in front of 18K people in Philly, they get 80K at Charlotte. Temple gets to travel to a great city and the payoff is much greater. I would love to attend but I am Clemson's biggest supporter in Indiana.

The release of the NFL schedule seems to be the only thing holding this up right now. If the Panthers are out of town on 10/9 then Temple-Clemson in Charlotte on 10/8 could be a possibility.

There are rumors/reports that the MSU-SC move to 8/31 could throw off Clemson's game with FAU the next week because of SC-FAU having to move but there are also rumors that Clemson-VT in Blacksburg could move to 9/3 (a Sunday) which would mean Clemson's game with La Tech would be moved or dropped.

One of the main goals of college football is to generate revenue for the schools involved. I seriously doubt that the game would sell out in Charlotte but it would still generate more money than if it was played it at the Linc in Philly. How much more money, is something that should be considered. However, I am strongly opposed to this move because I would like to see Clemson gain greater exposure nationally, especially in the northeast. This game provides a great opportunity for the many Clemson alumni who live in the PA/NJ/Middle Atlantic region to see the team. Plus Philadelphia with its history and cheap airfare, is an awesome destination for Clemson fans and players to visit for a weekend. Keep the game in Philadelphia!
