Vols' Schaefer & Smith charged with assault

Tennessee quarterback Brent Schaeffer and wide receiver Bret Smith have been suspended from the team after they were charged with assaulting another student.

The victim was reportedly arguing over a cellphone with Schaeffer's girlfriend when Schaeffer hit him. Schaeffer and the victim both allegedly grabbed baseball bats and then dropped them before Schaeffer picked the victim up and slammed him onto the floor. The victim hit his head on the floor and required staples to close the wound. Smith allegedly hit the victim while he was lying on the floor.

Both players were released on bond and have been suspended indefinitely, including the last two days of spring drills and the spring game. Their next court date is April 18.

An excerpt from Volunteer head coach Phil Fulmer's statement:

They made a bad social decision and were poor representatives of our team.
