Chow says Tennessee rumors are baloney

The Tennessee football team needs a new OC who will bring fresh ideas. Norm Chow is rumored to be less than thrilled with his first year with the Tennessee Titans. Fulmer says he would welcome a coach with NFL experience. See where this is going? So does Norm Chow and he says the rumors that he'll join the Vols staff are, "Absolutely 100 percent baloney."

"I enjoy this stuff," he said. "This is the biggest challenge of my life. I've done a lot in the college game so this is something I want to keep working at and keep getting better at.

"This is hard. Honestly, it's harder than I thought it would be. Defenses are just so good, so fast. It's such a challenge to find ways to attack."

...

Asked if he would consider a return to the college game, he said:

"At this point in time, no. I love the challenge of what we're doing. Now, if we get fired here and I need a job, sure."

In the meantime, UT fans, I think Norm Chow is officially off the radar.

Why in the world would Norm Chow choose to go to Tennessee when the door is probably always open for him to return to Southern Cal? Makes no sense.

I don't think the door is open at So. Cal. There had been a fall out before Norm Chow left. He'll be with the Titans for at least another year, especially after the Titans use their high pick on his old QB-Matt Leinhart.

I dont know anything about Norm Chow or what he wants to do. I had no idea that he might be even considering coming to Tennessee. But the man seems to like a challenge and being an offensive coordinator in the SEC would be a hands down bigger challenge then the OC job at USC. They play teams with no defense and they have a far beyond superior offense. But take a look at the defenses in the SEC and how bad Tennessee's offense has been. You want a challenge. There it is. And he wants defensive speed, well then all he has to do is look at the SEC. There is NFL like speed and potential all over the SEC. Look at the nation's top Defensive lists. It is flooded with SEC teams. I think that if an offensive coordinator like that. With Tennessee's offensive potential and that defense beats any team they played this year.

Sounds like a case of Tennessee Fandom getting a little high on themselves. To add onto what Mike says, why would he go to Tennessee when a Head Coaching job is open to him. I find it a little ridiculous as well that Phil Fulmer is taking heat. So they are having a down year due to the lack of consistent quarterback play and some injuries. A few breaks and they're 5-3.

Maybe Pete Carroll will get tired of winning national championships in a few years and retire to a house in Malibu so Chow can takeover.

VolsFan...Why on Earth would he go to Tennessee? If he left the pro's he would go back west, where he has spent his career and where his family is from. It was all he could do to get his wife to move to Nashville. You think if Nashville was a tough sell, think about Knoxville. It has got to be the worst place on earth. It is just like a Vol's fan to think that any job available in Knoxville is the best job available. No fan base in the country is more ignorant. You guys were 6-5, 7-4 every year until Fulmer came around and now that he is having a bad season 90% of the redneck nation wants to run him and his staff out of town. Deal with it. The real challange for Norm Chow would be having to wake every morning and put on his hunters-safety orange and not want to shoot himself. Hey, that reminds me of a joke:

Why do Vol's fans love their orange so much? They can go huntin' in the morning, the game that afternoon, and pick up trash on I-40 after the game.

Hey Boone, don't worry Carrol isn't going to have to worry about Ntl campionships after this year. Unless he has to play Miami this year, then he doesn't have to worry about one this year, there will not be any for the No-Defense Trojens.

This story is what you get when the media reports on what was little more than message board speculation....it's a non-story.

I've also heard Steve McNair might retire and become the OC at UT....

Sorry guys, Chow would probably go to Tallahassee if he returned to college ball. They would pay him more than most head coaches, Papa would give him total automony and he would be the aire appearent to FSU's talent loaded underachieving program. It would be to good a deal to say no ( IF he wanted to return to college).

I agree that UT needs to do something about the OC situation. I've been sreaming about Randy Saunders for awhile now. True, that Phil and the gang get the top notch "blue chip" recruits in the country but they can't keep them out of trouble. I for one am sick of the thugish image we have.

Hey Col. Reb. keep the redneck and all your other jokes to yourself. I get a feeling you do a lot by yourself.

First off col. reb, I didn't say he would want to. I just said if he wanted a challenge he should consider it. Tennessee has a lot of offensive talent not getting used properly and the SEC defenses are much tougher than the PAC-10 or any conference out west. And if you read my post you would know that I said I don't know anything about Norm Chow, definately his familt situation. And I dont think that Knoxville is the worst place in the world to live. I think that is a pretty bold and ignorant statement. And your talking about Tennessee fans being ignorant. And coaching at Tennessee is not the best job available. But it could be worse. Tenn has a pretty good football team year in and year out. And no one wants Fulmer gone. But Randy Sanders was not getting use of all the talent he had. You can't deny Tenn has a lot of offensive talent. If they didn't, they would not have had a pre-season heisman candidate RB, arguably the best wide receiving crew in the nation, and one of the best O-lines. Not to mention our defense is in the top 10 in the country still. But if we had all that hype, then there must have been some truth to it.Why did we not perform. Blame it on the OC, or the players but something is wrong when you can't score with the talent we have. And as for the redneck commit, I don;t even want to justify that by replying to it. That is just someone wanting to trash a southerner. You don't know me, where I come from, or what I do. You have no basis. And I am willing to bet you don't know anything about people from Tennessee. Have you ever even been to Knoxville. It is a very pleasant place to live and visit. Just call people take football a little too serious around here doesn't make them rednecks. it sounds like you take it a little to serious too. Does that make you a redneck?

volsfan1742- i agree with your post- i'm from so.cal and i have visited tennessee and i must say, it is a nice place- i wouldn't live there because of the weather, but that doesn't mean it's not a nice place...i'm glad you didn't have to go all crazy like that other guy- he must think that just because his degree says devry means that it's too good for the south...

back on topic- i like chow- he seems like good people- however, as much as i hate to say this- the glass ceiling will prevent him from truly finding a job that he will feel 100% happy about- stanford would've been a great place- because he would have been 100% happy about it- let's face it, on paper, he's great- bachelor's, master's and a doctorate in education- plus 2 national championships, over 30 years of football experience- developed great qb's (steve young et al.) been key to the contributing and defining what and how a top-notch OC should be, and now in the NFL- the pinnacle of any coach that wore his first pair of short bike shorts for the first time...

but he got denied- and you reading this would probably agree that you felt a little cheated, because the American system - based on good works will deliver good opportunities - has failed you just a little...or at least that's how i felt...

i hope it's not because he was Chinese, but honestly because he couldn't stack up to the Stanford coach who got the job...i really must believe that the system did not fail...but instead, coach harris has a resume that outshines chow's...that coach harris has exceeded the accomplishments and accolades of chow, and that is why he got the job at Stanford...

i guess my point is- a head coach job at a top ranked program...unlikely...but someone has to chip away at the glass ceiling...

People like Col Reb can only feel better about himself by insulting other teams and cities. It shows how little class Col. Reb has.Im sorry you dont have a team or city with the class of Knoxville or the VOLS to cheer for on saturday.Yes we take pride in our Vols. Can you say the same about your team? Or do you have anything to take pride in? I didnt think so.

UltimateTruth, I must disagree with you about Chow and the Stanford situation.

Harris is the Stanford president's old friend. That and that alone is the reason why Chow did not receive that job.

Otherwise, on paper and in the real world, HARRIS COULD NOT TIE CHOW'S SHOELACES.

Harris is a total joke compare to Chow. Just google Chow's achievements and compare them to Harris' mediocre past.

That, more than anything, has been and continues to be the American system.

Ability has rarely mattered where favoritism and politics hold sway.

UltimateTruth, the only reason Harris got the Stanford job is because he's old friends with the school president.

That and that alone is the reason why Chow did not receive that job.

Otherwise, in terms of proven ability, HARRIS COULD NOT TIE CHOW'S SHOELACES.

Just google Chow and compare his achievements to Harris' medicore record.

Favoritism has been and still is the American way. Ability and excellence have rarely mattered in this country, whether the subject is sports, business ot politics.

The only difference with athletics is that the playing field is level by definition.

In most other places the mediocre can hide behind something and push down the talented.

It's ugly but it's the truth.
