Longhorns Griffin and Taylor Under Investigation?
InsideUSC is proving, once again, to be on the leading edge of college football news. They're reporting that Texas Longhorns Cedric Griffin and Ramonce Taylor are being investigated for an alleged beating and robbery in Austin, Texas. Austin PD made the following statement:
The Austin Police Department is currently investigating two alleged criminal misconducts; an aggravated assault and a robbery by assault that occurred within the Downtown Area Command. These incidents occurred on September 4th and December 10th. Information obtained indicates that the individuals being investigated in these incidents are involved in the UT athletics program. Due to the fact that these cases are still being investigated, APD cannot provide additional information.
Neither Burnt Orange Nation, nor Bevo Beat, nor Bad Jocks are on top of this story yet. Stay tuned.
UPDATE: FoxSports is reporting that Griffin's lawyer admits that Griffin is the subject of an investigation.
UPDATE: Sat. Dec 17, 2005 8:15a ---Updated by Kevin Donahue
According to the police reports, the incidents were an alleged armed robbery with an automatic handgun on Sept. 4 and assault and attempted robbery on Dec. 10. If charges are brought aginst either or both, it would likely be a fairly serious charge, given that at least one incident involved a deadly weapon. Griffen's lawyer says that Griffen did speak with police about a Dec. 10 nonviolent "trash talking" incident.

SportsCenter just reported there are four players under investigation, not two.USC was already going to roll Texas like a cheap Cuban cigar. Now it could flat-out turn into the uglist thing on television since the facial close-up of Michael Jackson during his trial.

Houston Chronicle has it as four players, three of which are starters.
The Chronicle report also confirms that the alleged crimes are being investigated as felonies.

Yo, Aaron. What is it Benson is suppossed to have stolen? He did break down a door in search of a plasma tv someone stole from him (which he had purchased with money he made during his stint as a minor league baseball player - he was with the Dodgers), but he has never been accused of stealing anything. That's the problem with the internet -- no accountability.

Oh jesus. Another one of those comments.
There's just as much accountability on the internet as there is anywhere else -- and exactly the same kind.
People don't say anything different on the internet than they say in real life... I guess that's the problem with real life, too.

Breaking down someone's door probably wasn't the best way of going about recovering his plasma.
On a non-related note how is getting paid to play baseball different from getting endorsements for snowboarding? Why is one allowed and one not?

AgRyan04--I completely agree with you. Ridiculous that its okay to be a pro in one sport, but not in another. One of the many issues the NCAA needs to re-examine.
The problem, Mr. Holiday, is that people hear something, latch onto it and repeat it as fact without finding out/caring to learn the truth. It's so much easier to believe hearsay than to actually think. The difference is the volume of people. I tell you something man to man, you may or may not tell someone else, who may or may not continue it. With the internet, it lives forever in cyberspace and so many more people have access. With those numbers, it becomes "fact". The accountability issue comes in that if I tell you something in person, you know who to come back to. With the faceless, screen name world of .coms, that doesn't happen. I can say anything on a site without fear of retribution, save for being banned from the site. I guess you wouldn't mind if someone started tales concerning a family member/friend? I know I would.
What Ced did by breaking down the door was wrong. To my knowledge he has never been charged with theft. Aaron's statement, while intended to be humorous, besmirches an indidividual and university. That's wrong, too.

Does it really matter even if they are accused, unless they are physically sent to prison, they could still play football for UT, Miami, F$U, U of Michigan. Criminals get educations too. Well not so much education, maybe PSPs and Adidas. 200 hours of commnunity service at best, if they are guilty.

Benson said that he was trying to recover a stolen television. The television was supposedly stolen from him in 2002, yet he didn't try and get it back until October of 2003? I know if I owned a plasma television I wouldn't wait an entire year and then try to take back my television by force without ever filing a stolen property report.
Benson pleaded down to a misdemeanor to avoid jail time. I'll never be convinced that the alleged t.v. was actually his.ing a jail sentence.
The being said, it was a joke. People make jokes regarding those in the spotlight all the time. If Benson doesn't want his name slung through the mu he should stay out of police reports.
